films like Mr. Turner (the year's # 2 drama, behind Boyhood), Leviathan (2014's best -
reviewed foreign - language
film), and Sundance hit Whiplash.
Relativity raised its average Metascore, reduced its number
of poorly
reviewed films from five to three, and managed to hold onto its 9th - place ranking in domestic market share (though its grosses fell by over $ 50 million).
In all, Sony managed to collect terrible
reviews for a third
of its movies and saw its percentage
of films with positive
reviews drop
from 42 % in 2012 to just 27 % last year.
In the gallery above, we've identified 30 filmmakers
from the past four decades who have directed at least five features but have managed to receive positive
reviews for just a single one
of their
films.
I actually appreciate
reviews like this, not because I agree with them (or are likely to agree; I haven't seen the movie yet), but because they say exactly what I would expect to read
from an articulate
film lover who just isn't really
of the mindset to enjoy the MCU for what it is.
I recently read Roger Ebert's
review of a urban crime picture «Clockers» (A
film I greatly disliked) he wrote something true
from the results
of black on black drugs and violence.
And, out
of all distributors (including the indies), only six managed to avoid releasing a single negatively
reviewed film last year — that's down
from 10 such studios the previous year.
Warners» success rate (
of films receiving positive
reviews from critics) dropped
from 39 % in 2014 to just 16 % last year, while the studio's average Metascore declined by four points.
But, though we graded Lionsgate a «D» in 2015 — a year in which just three
of its
films received positive
reviews from critics — the quality
of the studio's output actually appears to be increasing, albeit slightly.
Built as a road movie in its first hour
of footage, the
film accompanies a truck driver on his way
from Kosovo to Belgrade... It's in the whole

Owned by Starz Media, Anchor Bay released a fairly dismal slate
of films in 2011, with only drama Beautiful Boy (sort
of an inferior, tamer version
of We Need to Talk About Kevin) scoring favorable
reviews from critics — and just barely.
Having won the Golden Lion at this year's Venice International Film Festival and a Special Filmmaking Achievement Award (but no mention in the ten best
films list)
from the National Board
of Review, Sofia Coppola's Somewhere is one
of the more highly anticipated independent releases
of December, especially if you liked her previous
films.
Despite all
of those well -
reviewed films, however, the studio's overall average score dropped nearly six points
from 2010, while its box office grosses declined slightly.
