It is common knowledge that
more reviews you get on Amazon, the
more your
book gets promoted by the Amazon algorithm and is likely to
sell more.

If / when an author in the group becomes published, he / she promises to help other members in the group also get published, and in return, they promise to write about and
review the author's

And as long as you're
selling books, you're going to continue getting
reviews, and
more than likely the good
reviews are going to outweigh the bad.
Promotion, endorsements, and positive
reviews are the fuel you'll need to
sell more books.
While these
review sites were geared
more towards physical products other than
books, such as gadgets that vendors might
sell through the Amazon Marketplace, some of the first complaints from the internet community about Amazon
reviews centered on self - published authors who were accused of buying
reviews of their
books.
Giving away free or
selling inexpensive copies is not expected just because... it's a tactic for getting exposure with the understanding that some of these copies will lead to
book reviews, which in turn helps get
more exposure and entree into certain marketing programs and options, and which helps prompt actual purchases as many readers are hesitant about buying a
book by an unknown, unreviewed author.
However, I find that once an author starts
selling books and getting
reviews that the first reason starts to fade away because the validation then comes from the audience of readers which is far
more valuable in the long run.

more recent material, I think anybody can build a large enough author platform to
sell 100 copies to actual readers in under a month, and 100 sales should be enough to get the ball rolling as long as you're also giving away about 1000 ARC copies to get
book reviews first).
My first two
books were standalones and they
sell fewer than the rest of my
books (despite loads
more reviews, blog tours, positive buzz, bigger launches,
more expensive covers... etc).
Amazon has also removed numerous
reviews because of the hint of purchased
reviews, which authors have admitted to so they could rank higher and
sell more books.
