I didn't think the «normal» sapphire was still being offered, but anyways I would not recommend it as the Sapphire preferred is so much superior and well worth the $ 95 / annual fee, which you can get back with the ability to make freedom points (either unlimited at 1.5 X's or regular) into Ultimate
rewards points, the no foreign transaction fees (remember not to go for the trick: would you like this in
currency x or in dollars - it's tempting to go for a dollar dominated transaction, but in essence, the way I understand it, you get charged a «transaction fee» to go from the home foreign
currency into dollars, whereas the CSP
card already pays for this transaction fee, so it's really a tricky semi-scam in my opinion.
Although co-branded credit
cards provide the easiest path toward a healthy stash of airline miles, a ton of other excellent
rewards credit
cards can also help you build an arsenal of travel
currencies.
There are also
cards that have flexible
rewards currencies that give you the ability to redeem through an online travel portal or transfer directly to airline and hotel partners.
Earning
rewards on foreign purchases — Charging in another

reward points, but make sure you have a

While this offer doesn't seem as big as any of the others on this list, Ultimate
Rewards are the most valuable
currency out of any of the
cards that currently have increased sign up bonuses.
In our minds, we often have settled ideas about the value of these
reward currencies — that, say, charging $ 1 on a
card will earn you a point, or accumulating 25,000 miles will yield a round - trip domestic plane ticket.
Generally, it is important to find a
rewards card that gives you
rewards in a
currency you like to use and plan to use.

currency» — meaning you can redeem points for a variety of options, including travel, merchandise, gift
cards and cash back.
Part of your credit
card strategy also involves signing up for the points
currencies that will give you the best value in terms of the sign up bonus, annual fees and
rewards.

Reward points can also be used for statement credits, gifts
cards, and a wide variety of other products through the Chase shopping portal, but that only offers a value of 1 cent per point, which is definitely not the best use of this valuable point
currency.

RBC
Rewards is the
currency of many of the RBC credit
cards.
It's actually a little misleading that Discover calls the
reward currency miles because this is truly a cash back
card.
Foreign transaction fee: Since this is not a travel
rewards card, this
card charges a 3 % foreign transaction fee if you use your
card in foreign countries, or if you pay for something in a foreign
currency, however this is a common fee for regular cash back credit
cards.
The LANPASS
card rewards miles, but the LANPASS program uses kilometers as its
currency.
The Starwood Preferred Guest Amex
card has the most flexible
rewards currency available.
Focusing on your goals will help you figure out what
rewards currency you should focus on earning and thus what
cards you should carry.
The big picture: by identifying what
rewards currency you want to concentrate on earning you can easily narrow in on the
cards that issue your selected
currency.
The drawback to the Ritz
card is that you won't be earning a
rewards currency that transfer out to as many partners (at good ratios) so you lose that but if your priority is getting lounge access to a handful of authorized users, you could easily save a couple of hundred bucks by going with the Ritz - Carlton
card.

cards always changing you'll be constantly re-evaluating which

cards to put your spend on.
On top of getting money back via TopCashback I can pay with my
rewards credit
card (so I earn points in my preferred
currency), I have my status recognised at the hotels I book at and I earn further points in the hotel's loyalty program too.

I'm not loving the fact that the main airline
rewards currency I'll be collecting is Avios but, as I've explained in a separate post, the minimum spend criteria that American Airlines now imposes on elite qualification makes reaching BA Gold considerably cheaper — so I'm just going to have to learn to live with Avios and make sure I collect more useful
currencies through credit
card spend.
