Most of the methane in the atmosphere comes from wetlands, natural and artificial associated with
rice agriculture.
However, several bottom - up studies indicate fewer emissions from tropical
rice agriculture (Li et al., 2002; Yan et al., 2003; Khalil and Shearer 2006).
Approximately 40 percent of methane is emitted into the atmosphere by natural sources (e.g., wetlands and termites), and about 60 percent comes from human activities like cattle breeding,
rice agriculture, fossil fuel exploitation, landfills and biomass burning.
After accounting for the ~ 3.9 Tg attributed to
rice agriculture in the current inventories, ~ 15.8 Tg of additional CH4 remain.
The anthropogenic sources include
rice agriculture, livestock, landfills and waste treatment, some biomass burning, and fossil fuel combustion.
These sources include wetlands,
rice agriculture, livestock, landfills, forests, oceans and termites.
By contrast, the powerful greenhouse gas methane is barely mentioned — perhaps because its main sources, while human - related, are «natural»:
rice agriculture and cattle - raising.
These results indicate a need for adaptation strategies in Indonesian
rice agriculture, including increased investments in water storage, drought - tolerant crops, crop diversification, and early warning systems.
