Dr. Small has worked with our team to create a range of
Rich Learning Tasks, exploring a variety of maths concepts in engaging and interactive ways.
We believe students learn better by doing and
our Rich Learning Tasks are a great example of this.
In addition to the interactive lessons, a huge library of printable
Rich Learning Tasks is available for Reception to Year 8 classrooms.
One of
the Rich Learning Tasks available within Mathletics explores proportional reasoning and place value, suitable for students in approximately Year 3.

Rich Learning Tasks are open - ended problem solving tasks where each question has multiple possible solutions to foster problem solving and reasoning skills.
Teachers also plan for students to be involved in small focused learning groups, as well as incorporating
rich learning tasks that promote investigative and collaborative learning.
Our school looks for ways to incorporate digital technologies all throughout the curriculum into
rich learning tasks — focused on fostering student creativity and critical thinking.

I began a quest to discover a way to make the seemingly adversarial
task of assessment turn into a
rich and powerful tool for
learning.
The three principal elements of the Protocol stress that Mathematics is more than covering content, that if we design
tasks well, everyone can be part of a
rich mathematical experience, and that classrooms are
learning environments focused on developing deep understanding.
The Year 7s at Bacchus Marsh College now spend three periods a week working on the individualised part of the Maths Pathway

rich conversations about what makes a high quality, engaging performance
task that places students in optimal position to demonstrate proficiency.
To hone these characteristics, lesson units and
learning activities should challenge students to engage in
rich tasks that require complex thinking and provide opportunities to practice self - directedness and self - assessment.
Studies found stronger student engagement in
learning in schools using the
Rich Tasks.
In new
learning cultures, teachers design
learning environments to cultivate creativity and the imagination, offer flexible boundaries, and support learners in undertaking meaningful, challenging, and collaborative
tasks — playing with
rich resources and making collective contributions to their culture.
It can not be forced by incentives that distract from the most important work teachers do with students: fostering genuine curiosity and love of
learning around
rich content and meaningful
tasks with that content.

So providing students with
rich workbased
learning experiences, not an easy
task in more urban settings, is made even more difficult.
Funded by the Annenberg Foundation, this initiative focuses on literacy and math coaches providing support to teachers from across the major subject areas to create literacy -
rich classrooms in which students actively engage in
learning tasks that deepen their content knowledge and strengthen their abilities to think critically and communicate well.
Finally, we need new assessments that can accurately measure
richer learning and more complex
tasks.
