It brings to bear
the rich tradition of the church, which becomes food for thought.

But it takes a special kind
of nerve to caution conservatives about «the high costs
of tying a
church with a
rich tradition of social teaching to the right end
of politics,» when you are on board with efforts at the left end
of politics to alter and thereby betray that
tradition.
The
church therefore would seem to have much to offer the New Urbanist enterprise out
of its own long intellectual and spiritual
traditions — not least a serious and sophisticated view
of human nature and human community, a pastoral mandate to serve
rich and poor, and a long history
of urban and architectural patronage.
The
church is also being regarded as an important community
of memory because the other sources
of a
rich narrative
tradition — families, ethnic groups, residential communities — are also subject to the growing pressures
of change, while more recent institutions, such as business firms and the mass media, are believed to have only shallow ties to the past.
We know, for example, that there were hymns and spiritual songs in the biblical
church, and later, the
rich traditions of chanting and polyphony developed.
Many felt that the theological task
of India need not be the preserve
of the «Brahmanic
Tradition» within the Indian
Church, which had always used «intuition, inferiority oriented approach» to theologising.14 Dalit theologians were
of the opinion that the theological and cultural domination
of Brahmanic
traditions within Indian Christianity, ignoring the
rich cultural and religious experience
of the Dalits had to be ignored, if not rejected completely.

His broad brush often covers the whole evangelical movement, but here and there he suggests that «in the ecumenical community
of the
church the evangelical
tradition is an honored member» and that «its views
of conversion,
of personal salvation and so on constitute a source
of riches.»
Much surely remains to be done so that the inestimable
riches of the Catholic
tradition become more visibly present in the day - to - day life
of the
Church.
Wainwright pleaded, «We should be seeking to bring the
churches and Christians
of this country to a deeper awareness
of the
riches of the great
Tradition.»
