With respect to antibiotic
resistance, this novelty can be induced and we can trace the novelty to particular mutations arising absent
gene transfer; i.e. the
genes which give
rise the
resistance were not present prior to the mutation, they are new sequences and not simply the activation
of dormant
genes.
But the rapid
rise of bacterial
genes for drug
resistance stems from more than lucky mutation, Levy adds.
«The
rising level
of integrons after 1990 in manured soil could indicate that through our efforts to reduce antibiotic
resistance, we have unintentionally increased
resistance gene exchange and more study is needed on the use
of animal manure,» says Prof Graham from Newcastle University.
«
Gene drives likely to be foiled by rapid
rise of resistance.»
In the current study, researchers tested two different CRISPR
gene drive constructs in the model fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, to investigate the
rise of resistance.
The study, led by Moran Yassour, a postdoctoral fellow at the Broad Institute and Harvard Medical School in Boston, also found a temporary
rise in the number
of antibiotic
resistance genes when antibiotics were given.
