To date,
food crops (corn, sugar,
and vegetable oil) have been the primary source of biofuels for transportation, but increased use of these
fuels has created more problems than solutions:
rising food prices
and food price volatility,
and accelerated expansion of agriculture in the tropics.
Using so much of the corn crop for
fuel for cars
and trucks rather than for
food has already caused world prices for corn to
rise sharply.
According to this argument, if U.S. farm production is used for
fuel instead of
food,
food prices
rise and farmers in developing countries respond by growing more
food.
A
rise in plastic
food packaging is failing to reduce Europe's growing
food waste problem,
and in some cases may even be
fueling it, according to new research.
This has direct negative effects within the US; including a
rise in the price of electricity, a
rise in the price of
foods (natural gas is a feedstock for fertilizers), a
rise in the price of goods (natural gas is a feedstock,
and source of industrial
fuel),
and a
rise in the price of home heating
fuel.»
Topics covered include everything from local
food festivals to potential civil unrest in the face of
rising fuel prices to urban community gardening to supermarket's phoney «local»
food initiatives - click below the fold for parts two, three

Food Fight: Is Corn
Food or
Fuel?
Notice, too, that Monsanto is drastically raising prices while it is making phenomenal profits, while
food prices are
rising dramatically (related often to its grains), leading to
food riots around the world,
and while
fuel is skyrocketing
and Monsanto's corn is now the basis of biofuel,
and while our economy is tanking.
With staple
food prices to
rise over 45 % over the next decade
and major oil disasters bringing national focus to our over-dependence on fossil
fuels, 2 % is no chump change.
In addition to snacks
and beverages, companies have been adding more lucrative prepared
food, which also provides a cushion against long - term threats such as the
rise of
fuel - efficient cars
and falling cigarette consumption.
«With the last two increases in interest rates,
and costs of
food,
fuel and electricity
rising, many households will be feeling the pinch
and it's time to assess what can be done to help you through any financially difficult months,» she said.
