In a small art department 50 miles north of Santa Monica, Christine Morla and Ichiro Irie teach
painting, drawing and design
at Oxnard College, in a city perhaps better known for its agriculture, military base, and punk
rock than for its visual art.
A small work might place a tree trunk
at the center, while the networks of tree limbs,
rocks, streaks of light, or ripples of water in his large
paintings have much in common with the weave of a drip
painting or of the canvas itself.
What
at first can look like mass media appropriation, as in the work of
rock star - worshipping artist Richard Prince — who showed a nose cone plastered with images of the band Kiss last summer in East Hampton as well as pictures of Sid Vicious over Jackson Pollock's photo
at his show
at Guild Hall — Joester's work has more in common with Montauk's Peter Beard, who takes his own photos of endangered African wildlife and uses them as the basis for multi-media collage using mud, blood, feathers and
paint.
Heavy
Painting, a rebellious exhibition with an undeniable
rock and roll feel is now exhibiting
at the Mike Weiss Gallery.
MUSIC MEETS ART
Rock band Everything Everything have created a special musical track inspired by Francis Bacon's Triptych - August 1972, which was previously one of three Bacon artworks included in Tate Britain's chronological display «BP Walk through British Art» (please note the
painting is no longer on display
at Tate Britian *).
«I found everything so remote but,
at the same time, familiar when I occasionally looked into the mountains,
rocks, pine trees and plums depicted in old literati
paintings.
Altered States looks
at contemporary artists who explore psychedelia (mostly
painting and some constructions with a mix of figuration, geometric and Op imagery) against a back drop of 1960s Op Art, figurative and Color Field
paintings, as well as original
rock posters from concerts
at the Fillmore West, Avalon Ballroom and other San Francisco venues to set the stage and create the mood.
In Thorne's current installation A Wall Around a Window
at Devin Borden Gallery, site there are
paintings of bricks, look louvers, clinic
rocks, wood grain, and even a crochet pattern laser - cut into a small stool.
