postpartum doula helps the mother with the transition and adjustment that comes with having a new addition to the family and the new (or recurring)
role of motherhood.
Any family member can play this
role, but
postpartum doulas are professionally trained to honor the
role of the parents and to not interfere or judge what the parents goals are but rather to support them as they get to know their baby.
They quickly learn that the
doula's
role will never come close to the relationship that a grandparent can provide, and that the immediate support
of a
postpartum doula can help answer their questions as well.
