Mertz should never have been our captain in the first place... who has ever heard of a
team that makes 11th hour transfer buys (Arteta & Mertz) then seemingly places those same individuals into prominent leadership positions from the get - go... indicative of the problems that have permeated our clubhouse for the
better part of 7 years under the Kroenke & Wenger... what is wrong with the players chosen and / or the management style of Wenger that doesn't develop and / or encourage strong leadership from within... Mertz was the fine collecting lackey from year one... this is what happens when you don't get world - class players because many times they want to have a voice
on and off the pitch and this can't happen when you play for a fragile manager who has developed a coddling wage structure where everyone is rewarded for simply wearing the shirt and participating in the process... not enough balance between performance and pay, combined with the obvious favoritism shown to some players regardless of their glaring lack of production... remember that Ramsey has played in positions that make no sense considering his skill - set (out wide) and has forced other players off the field or into equally unfamiliar positions with little or no justification (let's remember when you read articles about how Ramsey's goals this upcoming season being the potential X-factor for our success that this is the same individual who didn't score a goal until the final week last season)... this of course is just one example of many... before I hear another word from Mertz I want this club to address the fact that no former player of any real consequence has any important
role in the management structure of this club, yet several former Gunners have expressed serious interest in just such an endeavor (Henry, Viera, Adams, Bergkamp... just to name a few legends)... there is only one answer: an extremely insecure manager!!!

Our side has been

well as having played a key

team as we look to secure a spot in the top four, whilst also being available for the Europa League.

I'd have focused more
on Torres (which I did), the lack of CB depth (I'd prefer to have two quality CBs to back up a 3 back rather than just one with one of the starters being a converted CDM), the lack of players who fit the outside mid
role well in this formation (which, hey, maybe that's part of what you were referring to), and the fact that when you play more attackers higher up the pitch, it often requires a
team to be able to implement a high pressuring defensive line (Dempsey and Bruin are not suited for that).
I see those 3 guys as the

He also know's that football relies

This is an incredibly difficult question to answer for a variety of reasons, most importantly because over the years our once vaunted «beautiful» style of play has become a shadow of it's former self, only to be replaced by a less than stellar «plug and play» mentality where players play out of position and adjustments / substitutions are rarely forthcoming before the 75th minute... if you look at our current players, very few would make sense in the traditional Wengerian system... at present, we don't have the personnel to move the ball quickly from deep - lying position, efficient one touch midfielders that can make the necessary through balls or the disciplined and pacey forwards to stretch defences into wide positions, without the aid of the backs coming up into the final 3rd, so that we can attack the defensive lanes in the same clinical fashion we did years ago...
on this current squad, we have only 1 central defender
on staf, Mustafi, who seems to have any prowess in the offensive zone or who can even pass two zones through so that we can advance play quickly out of our own end (I have seen some inklings that suggest Holding might have some offensive qualities but too early to tell)... unfortunately Mustafi has a tendency to get himself in trouble when he gets overly aggressive
on the ball... from our backs out wide, we've seen pace from the likes of Bellerin and Gibbs and the spirited albeit offensively stunted play of Monreal, but none of these players possess the skill - set required in the offensive zone for the new Wenger scheme which requires deft touches, timely runs to the baseline and consistent crossing, especially when Giroud was playing and his ratio of scored goals per clear chances was relatively low (
better last year though)... obviously I like Bellerin's future prospects, as you can't teach pace, but I do worry that he regressed last season, which was obvious to Wenger because there was no way he would have used Ox as the right side wing - back so often knowing that Barcelona could come calling in the off - season, if he thought otherwise... as for our midfielders, not a single one, minus the more confident Xhaka I watched played for the Swiss national
team a couple years ago, who truly makes sense under the traditional Wenger model... Ramsey holds onto the ball too long, gives the ball away cheaply far too often and abandons his defensive responsibilities
on a regular basis (doesn't score enough recently to justify): that being said, I've always thought he does possess a little something special, unfortunately he thinks so too... Xhaka is a little too slow to ever boss the midfield and he tends to telegraph his one true strength, his long ball play: although I must admit he did get a bit
better during some points in the latter part of last season... it always made me wonder why whenever he played with Coq Wenger always seemed to play Francis in a more advanced
role on the pitch... as for Coq, he is way too reckless at the wrong times and has exhibited little offensive prowess yet finds himself in and around the box far too often... let's face it Wenger was ready to throw him in the trash heap when injuries forced him to use Francis and then he had the nerve to act like this was all part of a bigger Wenger constructed plan... he like Ramsey, Xhaka and Elneny don't offer the skills necessary to satisfy the quick transitory nature of our old offensive scheme or the stout defensive mindset needed to protect the defensive zone so that our offensive players can remain aggressive in the final third...
on the front end, we have Ozil, a player of immense skill but stunted by his physical demeanor that tends to offend, the fact that he's been played out of position far too many times since arriving and that the players in front of him, minus Sanchez, make little to no sense considering what he has to offer (especially Giroud); just think about the quick counter-attack offence in Real or the space and protection he receives in the German National
team's midfield, where
teams couldn't afford to focus too heavily
on one individual... this player was a passing «specialist» long before he arrived in North London, so only an arrogant or ignorant individual would try to reinvent the wheel and / or not surround such a talent with the necessary components... in regards to Ox, Walcott and Welbeck, although they all possess serious talents I see them in large part as headless chickens who are
on the injury table too much, lack the necessary first - touch and / or lack the finishing flair to warrant their inclusion in a regular starting eleven; I would say that, of the 3, Ox showed the most upside once we went to a back 3, but even he became a bit too consumed by his pending contract talks before the season ended and that concerned me a bit... if I had to choose one of those 3 players to stay
on it would be Ox due to his potential as a plausible alternative to Bellerin in that wing - back position should we continue to use that formation... in Sanchez, we get one of the most committed skill players we've seen
on this squad for some years but that could all change soon, if it hasn't already of course... strangely enough, even he doesn't make sense given the constructs of the original Wenger offensive model because he holds onto the ball too long and he will give the ball up a little too often in the offensive zone... a fact that is largely forgotten due to his infectious energy and the fact that the numbers he has achieved seem to justify the means... finally, and in many ways most crucially, Giroud, there is nothing about this
team or the offensive system that Wenger has traditionally employed that would even suggest such a player would make sense as a starter... too slow, too inefficient and way too easily dispossessed... once again, I think he has some special skills and, at times, has showed some world - class qualities but he's lack of mobility is an albatross around the necks of our offence... so when you ask who would be our
best starting 11, I don't have a clue because of the 5 or 6 players that truly deserve a place in this side, 1 just arrived, 3 aren't under contract beyond 2018 and the other was just sold to Juve... man, this is theraputic because following this
team is like an addiction to heroin without the benefits
why did we play Welbeck in the striker's
role... no one can question his heart but to have a player with such limited first - touch and finishing skills against such a game opponent with Lacazette
on the bench is almost unforgivable... maybe it's because Welbeck tows the party line or maybe it's because Welbeck doesn't know anything but 100 %
on the pitch, unfortunately neither of these qualities makes him a capable starting striker
on a
team with any real aspirations... I can only hope that he was being showcased for a move elsewhere, as there was some talk last week about some interest from Everton... if he moved
on that would be the only silver lining of this coach's decision, but once again it wouldn't excuse this club for putting business decisions ahead of fielding the
best possible
team to secure 3 points at Anfield
All of a sudden he's gone from a prominent
role on a basement
team to a smaller
role on a surprisingly
good team that reportedly has a very tight - knit locker room and a very different style of play.
The key test for Balotelli now though is to add consistency, as it's all
well and
good producing in a big game against the Italian champions, but can he repeat the trick and play a decisive
role for his
team away at Sampdoria
on Sunday?
Teams are getting more comfortable with each other, players are finding their
role on the

I still don't understand people's obsession with boxing players in to a specific
role... The whole «true DM» is a dying breed, even Coquelin is arguably something else considering the advanced positions he takes up often in front of Santi and takes major risks in winning the ball back for us... IMO, the reason Coquelin has had such a successful integration into the first
team is that he focussed incredibly hard
on the basics of his
role first and foremost before adding other elements to his game (long - balls, driving runs into space, more aggressive ball movement in general) it's not rocket science to tell a player to curb the attacking side of their game and focus primarily
on defence before attack... Nor is it that hard to see that playing in a midfield pairing with either Ramsey or Cazorla is going to be different as
well.
With questions surrounding declining production in from the veterans, as
well with the health of Zach Parise who missed the playoffs with a back injury, for this
team to be successful it's going to require the kids taking
on a larger
role on the ice.
Wenger put ozil
on the wing for his development one thing i do nt get is how the fans do nt see that Wenger done the same process with Wilshere, I remember when Monreal was caught out at the back post from a set piece and ozil did nt cover he just jogged abit n let monreal get beat, that would be video evidence for Ozil to learn and work
on his duty to defend instead of giving him Candy like a baby n letting him be lazy in the middle not tracking back for the
team its a learning process im 100 % Wenger knows ozils
best position is in the centre he followed him since Shalke its obvious but Wenger develops players into world class after seeing Ozil in the world cup and coming back after the world cup i coud see he defended alot more helping out monreal
on the flanks and putting in alot more effort only then once hes showed his duty in defending will he be given his free
role in the middle.
Grujic featured for Liverpool Under 23s
on Monday night in a 2 - 0 win over Chelsea, but in order to really prepare him for a more prominent
role in Klopp's side moving forward, perhaps regular first -
team football at senior level elsewhere will stand him in
better stead for the future.
Cazorla is not the
best defender and against tough
teams he may struggle — he was clearly playing a deeper
role — and vs. Chelsea he would thus be needed to sometimes defend with the DM and stand strong
on the ball.
Jack looks to be
on his way back to full fitness at present however, and could
well be in contention for a first -
team role in the coming months, but could he persuade Wenger to demote Xhaka or Ramsey from the first XI?
Morris made quite a nice
role for himself
on a
good Wizards
team.
Finally, if Wenger really cares that Arsenal go to the next level with Lacazette in the striker's
role he will need to surround him with the proper kinds of players, those who compliment his skills and give him a legitimate chance to lead the line... if they can spread the opposing
teams back line with Sanchez
on the left and someone of consequence
on the right (must purchase this individual), this would likely create some space for Ozil in the middle of the pitch... having 3 players who can not only create their own opportunities, but provide assists and make
well - timed runs, could bring some much - needed directness back into our ticky - tack approach of late... unfortunately instead of making the tough decisions and spending the supporters money in the right places, we instead have wasted so much time bashing our heads against the same brick wall over and over again and expecting different results..
Well you might be surprised to see his EPL stats
on Squawka.com compared to his
team mate Mikel Arteta, to his own stats from last season and to the player everyone is raving about in that
role, Chelsea's Nemanja Matic.
Alexis should also be very high
on the shortlist to be included in your fantasy
team, as he is relishing his new
role in the side, but there is the possibility that Olivier Giroud could
well be selected to play up front now he has returned to fitness, and the Chilean could suffer if he is benched or put back in his previous
role.
We have plenty of midfeilders that can play the striker
role and plenty of those same players
on the bench as
well with no playing time because of a crowded
team.
Welbz and Theo could be
good competition for the CF
role and I would like to see how
well our attack could perform when they are use to having pace upfront again instead of Giroud, I've tried my
best to support the guy but he makes it hard This season he has proved me wrong and I am also questioning his effect
on the
team, he does moan a lot to the other players when he was the one who should of done more... If it was Alexis moaning then I could understand it as that guy plays with 200 % passion but Giroud... Only time he shows passion is when he feels his starting spot is threatened.
Double and triple
team them and make anyone else beat you has been tried before, but I've never seeen it executed quite this
well, with

Francis Coquelin is Arsenal's
best anchorman, but does not perform his
role as effectively as Dier, as evidenced by the Gunners often being caught out
on the break, especially against the top
teams.
Chamberlain is enjoying his longest run of regular football in the first -
team since joining the club thanks to him impressive displays in the new
role, although with Sead Kolasinac also impressing since him move from Schalke, along with the return of key defenders, the Ox could
well find himself back
on the bench in the near future.
Pretty much sums up how these Nets fans just want to trade away the guy that was instrumental to the
team's
best stretch of record over the last two years, with inferior talents like Sean Kilpatrick and Isaiah Whitehead, and Levert, RHJ and Harris (before they made a huge leap this year) playing crucial
roles on the
team.
Obviously two players in the same position are still going to have different
roles in two
teams based
on what the
team needs; that doesn't mean that you can't use stats to evaluate how
well a player would adapt into a
team along with simply watching their play.
Wenger appears to recognize that a
team requires a
good player
on the ball in the DM pos, if you look at pre gazidis era then we see Wenger had made sure we had quality in those
roles.
So Wenger has stuck with the same starting line - up that did us so proud in Greece, meaning that Theo Walcott starts in a wide
role once more, although I assume that he will start
on the left this time as the
team looked so much
better with him there and the much improved Campbell
on the right.
