From a lack
of visible mentors and
role models to underrepresentation in startup communities and pontification about including more
women in tech,
without much action, the challenges that
women face in the tech field are well - known.
Forced gender
roles impacts relationships in countless negative ways, but the one I want to unpack here is the way this form
of legalism can hamper honest communication between spouses by requiring
women to «influence» their husbands
without ever actually leading them.
The other side argues that a female in today's «liberated» society is still a «
woman» and as such should fit into God's ordained and orderly creation, fulfilling her
role of submission and dependence in church and family
without impatience on the one hand or servitude on the other.
They speak
of church cultures that treated
women's bodies as inherently problematic and seductive, that assigned a
woman's worth to her sexual purity or procreative prowess, that questioned
women's ability to think rationally or make decisions

roles as helpers and homemakers, and that effectively silenced victims
of abuse by telling

of Christ.
In this context Hans Urs Von Balthasar observed that since the Council the Church has become more than ever a male institution, which
without the Marian dimension threatens to become inhuman and irrelevant.9 It is essential that we rediscover the feminine, Marian dimension
of the Church because viewing the Church as a mere organisational or institutional entity not only impoverishes her from within but also «severely diminishes her authentic religious appeal and misleads
women who are seeking a legitimate and fruitful
role».10 The loss
of this feminine dimension
of the Church gives rise to a false feminism in the Church - one which expresses itself in appeals for the ordination
of woman.
In trying to understand the contribution
of women to the early church, it must be recognised that the
role they played in nourishing orthodoxy can not be underestimated, whether this nourishment came directly from within or, as often was the case, from the fringes, or even from «
without».
These texts and studies do not exhaust the various ways in which
women were perceived, and their
roles commented upon, by writers
of the early church, but they offer points
of departure for a discussion on the contribution
of women to the life and witness
of the early church
