Fortunately, these same

Rooms awarded through their PointsBreaks ® program
cost just 5,00 points per night, and many perfectly reasonable Holiday Inn properties require just 10,000 or 15,000 points per night.
On the hotel side of things, you often can expect the co-branded credit cards to provide at least mid-tier elite status that may get you late checkout or a
room upgrade, and the best ones even give you an annual
award night that can offset the
cost of the annual fee!
Plus, since the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville is just a Category 2 property, I could opt to book a
room using the points + cash rate of 4,000 points + $ 55 instead of a full - out
award night
costing 8,000 points and still receive credit toward the promotion for our stay.
Based on my research, I concluded that irregular pricing occurred when a hotel has a high enough fixed value assigned to HHonors points redeemed for premium
rooms and, for whatever reason, the best available rate for premium
rooms is low enough to drop the price in cash, after conversion to HHonors points, below the HHonors point
cost for a standard
room award.
Indeed, if you could book a standard
room at the premium
room award conversion rate, it would
cost just 41,719 HHonors points per night!

The good news is that
award nights appear to be pretty easy to find, the bad news is that, if you can't find an
award night for a date that works for you, the
room costs are going to be high.
If you know which city (cities) you'd like to visit then go check out how much a
room costs for your preferred dates and, more importantly, if
award nights are available.
In the example below an
award night at the property
costs 50,000 points but I can also book the
room for 35,000 points + $ 99.
While the brand isn't flawless by any means and while
room rates can be high, the fact that the most an
award night can
cost you is 30,000 points (at the time of writing) makes these properties great for
award redemptions.
An
award night at a Category 7 Hyatt property
cost 30,000 Gold Passport Points (for a standard
room) and, if you bought points in this promotion to book such a
room, it would
cost you $ 513.

room on the same date.

room at the Park Hyatt New York was booked using 30,000 Hyatt points per night when the selling price was almost $ 1,000 per night; and most of our other flights were booked via a collection of airline miles and credit card points that were primarily earned by leveraging our everyday spending for major rewards.
I calculated the hotel by booking the
award redemption and then immediately looking at what a paid REFUNDABLE stay for the same
room type would
cost as all my
award redemptions could be cancelled with no penalty.
Also, keep in mind that there are usually no taxes on
award nights as most cities tax hotel
rooms by the dollar amount paid, so a $ 250 hotel might actually
cost you over $ 300 out of pocket.
When the Hilton booking engine determines the number of HHonors points required to book a premium
room award night, it applies a mechanical calculation, multiplying the revenue
cost of the
room by a constant HHonors point valuation to arrive at a total
cost in HHonors points.
