Xunantunich Mayan
Ruin — «El Castillo» adorned with an expressive architectural frieze is the tallest structure at the
site (approx. 130 feet) and is visible for miles
around.
Both of these trail segments meet above the Inca
ruins of Patallaqta (sometimes called Llaqtapata), a
site used for religious and ceremonial functions, crop production, and housing for soldiers from the nearby hilltop
site of Willkaraqay, an ancient pre-Inca
site first inhabited
around 500 BC.
Whilst a burial
site dating from the seventh century has been discovered in the area, Wilderswil itself is first mentioned in early twelfth - century writings and may have grown up
around Unspunnen Castle, the
ruins of which may still be visited today.
There were hardly any cars in the parking lot when we arrived, and it was lovely to explore the almost empty
ruins site with only a handful of other people
around for most of our morning there.
From the Kukulcan Temple / El Castillo, we explored the remainder of this expansive
ruins site and the variety of structures, which were accessed via gravel pathways stemming off of the large open area
around El Castillo.
If you arrive at the
ruins site close to their opening time at 8 AM, you will largely be able to avoid the huge crowds of tourists which start arriving
around 11 AM and the annoying vendors lining the paths inside the
site.
Our trek will start with a gentle walk of a small ravine after 2 hours then we need to climb
around 400 meters to the reach Pumamarka
ruins, the walk from here is one hour to reach the Inca
site of Huchuy Qosqo, recently restored by archaeologists, located at 3,450 mals from this point it is clear to see many beautiful mountains as Chicon, Pitusiray, Sawasiray, Waccaywilca or Veronica ancient sacred mountains «Apus» so respected and venerated by the locals Incas - Quechuas descendents living in this valleys for centuries.
I visited during mid-afternoon when the
ruins were already very crowded and when the sun's heat was super intense, but I still had an enjoyable experience wandering
around the
site.
How To Get There — Chichen Itza can be most easily reached from the small colonial city of Valladolid and only involves a 45 minute colectivo or bus ride, which makes it possible to explore the
ruins site before the large crowds of tourists arrive
around mid to late morning.
Around 5:00 pm we will arrive at the
site of Winaywayna the last of the remarkable
ruins enroute, which we will have time to explore and have a guided visit (2,700 m / 8,856 ft).
You can rent bicycles at the entrance of the
ruins, which I would recommend doing as its the faster and easier way to get
around within the
site.
The area
around the
ruins of Machu Picchu consists of many rocky pinnacles with exposures supporting thin soils, although the area also includes
sites with complex systems of old Inca terraced land constructed to conserve the soils.
