We also
ran a
gallery out of the space for just over 2 years, however we closed the
gallery in January
of this year so I could get back to being an artist full time.
LOIS DODD: As you say it was a very exciting time, we were
running our own show, so to speak and made a
gallery out of it.
Lisa Hoke fills a
gallery with colored film stretched on open frames, as if a kite had cloned itself until
running out of space.
And Bushwick's culture producers do tend to
run their DIY
galleries out of living rooms, storefronts and forsaken industrial spaces.
Nevertheless Robert Motherwell; Early Collages, which
runs through January 5, is well worth seeing and these works, placed today in a small
gallery on the Lower East Side, in the guise
of having just come
out of the studio
of some young artist, would appear completely viable and credible as contemporary works because there are so many artists today, here in New York showing on the LES and Bushwick as well as elsewhere in the United States and Canada and perhaps globally, still working in the orbit
of the aesthetic consensus
of post-War formalism.
Some face
out, like a wall now for Jonathan Borofsky and the silhouette
of his
Running Man, but others do implicitly, because partitions never erase the feeling
of vast uninterrupted
galleries.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Szeemann was pushed
out of his position at the state -
run Kunsthalle Bern over this and a proposed Beuys solo exhibition, whose contribution to Live in Your Head had included a pile
of fat seeping into a corner
of the
gallery.
The
gallery started
out in Bushwick before moving into the heart
of the LES, becoming one
of New York's most - written - about, market - friendly, young artist -
run spaces.
To the
gallery's credit, the complimentary bar never

What we're left with is pretty exciting: A 70 - foot bee magnet at Socrates Sculpture Center by Meg Webster, a round table discussion on why artist -
run galleries are the bomb, and a Chucky - like doll by Jordan Wolfson we're pretty sure will scare the crap
out of you.
Mr. Malouf's mushroom paintings also appear in a moody, tightly organized exhibition
of six promising artists in the back
galleries of Greene Naftali, though they are not quite as dominant a force there, given the presence
of two laser lights by Sam Pulitzer (who has a nearly invisible co-authored piece in the Feuer show,
runs a vitriolic blog with Mr. Malouf and others, and is also a dealer, again with Mr. Malouf, operating the William
gallery out of a garbage can in a Chinatown building).
As a boy, Sam Trioli spent summers on the Cape enjoying its attributes and returns with an exceptional exhibition at Farm Project Space +
