Now we know that some practices of the past — such as using
bumpers and drop - side
cribs — are big no - no's; they're not
safe for babies.
The same goes for
crib bumper pads, but we'll talk more about
safe baby bedding a little later on.
The difference, however, is that if you follow all of the
safe crib guidelines (right
crib construction, flat, tight sheet, no pillows,
bumpers, stuffed animals, etc.) then you can be GUARENTEED that your baby is as
safe as possible (not that they won't die but that you have done everything you possibly can to prevent that).

While we're on the topic, ensure that your
crib is a
safe place by making sure it's not on recall, that it's assembled correctly (with all bolts tightened), and does NOT have
crib bumpers.
The bottom line is that the risks far outweigh the benefits, and skipping the
crib bumper is your
safest bet.
Avoiding
crib bumpers is one way to keep your little one
safe in her
crib; it dramatically reduces the risk of SIDS or suffocation.
