Continued support from OST for innovative tools and techniques that are necessary to (1) quickly address and incorporate emerging available technologies into the program, (2) better evaluate the safety performance of vehicles, (3) identify for consumers vehicles with exceptional safety performance, and (4) stimulate the development of even safer vehicles for consumers.

FRA is responsible for promulgating and enforcing rail safety regulations; administering railroad assistance programs; conducting research and development in support of improved railroad safety and national rail transportation policy; providing for the rehabilitation of the Northeast Corridor rail passenger service; and consolidating government support of rail transportation activities.

In FY 2015, the Hazardous Materials Safety program conducted 1,227 hazardous materials inspections, educated over 3,000 hazmat stakeholders through multimodal seminars and workshops, funded 11 research and development projects, and awarded 73 grants to 50 states, tribes, and non-profit entities.

The SRTS program provides money to help communities enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school; to make walking and bicycling to school safe and more appealing; and to facilitate the planning, development and implementation of projects that will improve safety, and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of schools.

The contract provides support the FMCSA National Training Center to develop and implement training in the FMCSA Safety, Criminal Interdiction and professional development programs.
