About eReaders — What I'm really
saying is don't worry too much

Like, when somebody
says they read a book digitally your mind automatically assumes they're talking
about Kindle — it is synonymous with the
eReader format.
Of course, that's basically what Steve Jobs
said about the Kindle and
ereaders back in January 2008, right?
(For all the talk
about ebooks, anecdotally, I'd
say pretty much, well, no one actually owns an
ereader.)
Guren
said Microsoft does not disclose e-book sales figures for its
eReader software, but
said that the company has distributed
about 7 million copies of the program through downloads, CD - ROMs and bundled with PocketPCs.
If I heard correctly they
said the price will be comparable to other
ereaders with
about the same screen size on the market.
Having
said all that, and in the spirit of optimism
about this new entrant into the
ereader marketplace, I am not going to start nit - picking
about the device.
The
eReader has 1 GB of memory which Indigo
says should allow owners to store
about 1,000 titles.
Although I do agree with what you
said about the softness of
ereaders and books, it's more desirable as a reader.
While the invitation
says nothing
about a tablet been announced, the May 24th date corroborates with the previous report
about B&N launching a new
eReader on the very same date.
You can't really assume that holiday Kindle sales are having anything but a positive effect on everything related to the
eReading line, so it might be the end of first quarter before we can
say anything definitive
about ongoing positive trends.
