AFP reports that Israeli researchers found that frequent cell phone users — described as people who chatter on mobiles more than 22 hours a month — had a nearly 50 percent higher risk than others of developing a
tumor on the parotid
gland (the largest of the
salivary glands on the side of the face just in front of the ear).

Tumors arising from the
salivary glands are uncommon, although slightly more common in cats than in dogs.

tumors of
salivary glands may be due to infections and cysts.
Infiltration of a
salivary gland may also cause
tumor - like swelling of the
gland.
Mast cell
tumors have been reported to develop infrequently in other sites like head, neck, conjunctiva,
salivary gland, nasopharynx, larynx, oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, ureter and spine.
There are many other causes of swelling in this area such as puncture wounds, abscesses, infections of the teeth, and
tumors, but most common relate to the
salivary glands.
