This
average meal uses up to 17 times more petroleum products, and increases carbon dioxide
emissions by the
same amount, compared to an entirely local meal.
In his new paper, Lovejoy applies the
same approach to the 15 - year period after 1998, during which globally
averaged temperatures remained high by historical standards, but were somewhat below most predictions generated by the complex computer models used by scientists to estimate the effects of greenhouse - gas
emissions.
Keystone XL itself would exacerbate that — the U.S. State Department notes that the greenhouse gas
emissions from just the pipeline's pumps would be 4.4 million metric tons per year, roughly the
same as one
average U.S. coal - fired power plant.
On the contrary —
averaging fuel consumption of 9.0 litres / 100 kilometres (equal to 26.1 mpg US) and CO2
emissions of 210 grams per kilometre in the EU test cycle, the new top model offers the
same superiority also in this respect as the BMW Z4 sDrive35i with Sport Automatic.
The
same goes for the CO2 - minimising BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition, whose peak output of 120 kW / 163 hp contrasts with
average fuel consumption in the EU driving cycle of 4.1 l / 100 km (68.9 mpg imp) and CO2
emissions of 109 g / km.
At the
same time a 5.9 L / 100 km combined fuel consumption
average is claimed, along with CO2
emissions of just 139g / km.
63 percent of respondents said the United States should move forward to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions, regardless of what other countries do... In the
same poll, the public supported — by a margin of 63 percent to 37 percent — requiring electric utilities to produce at least 20 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources, even if that would cost the
average household an extra $ 100 per year.»
Absent
emission, absorption, reflection, scattering, and refraction outside of a sphere with radius 1, and assuming steady state, the flux coming out of such a sphere is the
same as the flux coming out of any closed surface enveloping that sphere; the area of a sphere is proportional the square of the radius, so the
average flux per unit area going through successively larger spheres follows an inverse square law.
For a small amount of absorption, the
emission upward and downward would be about the
same, so if the upward (spectral) flux from below the layer were more than 2 * the (
average) blackbody value for the layer temperature (s), the OLR at TOA would be reduced more than the net upward flux at the base of the layer, decreasing CO2 TOA forcing more than CO2 forcing at the base, thus increasing the cooling of the base.
2: Our Changing Climate, Key Message 5).2 Regional climate models (RCMs) using the
same emissions scenario also project increased spring precipitation (9 % in 2041 - 2062 relative to 1979 - 2000) and decreased summer precipitation (by an
average of about 8 % in 2041 - 2062 relative to 1979 - 2000) particularly in the southern portions of the Midwest.12 Increases in the frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation are projected across the entire region in both GCM and RCM simulations (Figure 18.6), and these increases are generally larger than the projected changes in
average precipitation.12, 2
California, which leads the «union» states in carbon - reducing policies, cut
emissions by 1.5 million metric tons in 2013 (compared with 2012); at the
same time, its economy grew at a faster pace than the national
average.
Christy is correct to note that the model
average warming trend (0.23 °C / decade for 1978 - 2011) is a bit higher than observations (0.17 °C / decade over the
same timeframe), but that is because over the past decade virtually every natural influence on global temperatures has acted in the cooling direction (i.e. an extended solar minimum, rising aerosols
emissions, and increased heat storage in the deep oceans).
If global greenhouse gas
emissions continue to rise at the
same pace that they did in the first decade of this century, ski resorts could see half as many sub-freezing days compared to historical
averages by late century.
Climate economists argue, for instance, for a globally harmonized carbon tax even as they acknowledge the extraordinary moral, political and economic obstacles to asking the
average African to pay the
same toll on her
emissions as the
average European.
I think it's worth noting that even running on pure coal - electricty, a plug - in hybrid electric today would have much lower
emissions of greenhouse gasses than the
average new car today running on gasoline, and about the
same emissions as a regular hybrid.
For all of its warnings, and despite a steady escalation of greenhouse gas
emissions into the atmosphere, the planet's
average surface temperature has remained pretty much the
same for the last 15 years.
Projected global
average temperature rise above pre-industrial levels under a range of future scenarios, «business as usual» (BAU), which assumes no mitigation efforts are made (RCP8.5); «mitigation», which assumes moderate
emissions (RCP4.5) without negative
emissions, «carbon dioxide removal» (CDR), which assumes moderate
emissions with long - term CO2 removal; and «solar radiation management» (SRM), which is the
same as the CDR pathway but also includes enough SRM to limit temperatures to 1.5 C by 2100.
Gensler's work on designing more energy efficient buildings saves the equivalent of 3.2 years» worth of carbon
emissions from an
average coal power plant — the
same as taking 2.34 million passenger vehicles off the road for one year.
As a result of declining demand and this generation shift, power sector
emissions fell by roughly the
same amount in 2017 as the 2005 - 2016 annual
average (Figure 2), though less than in 2016 and 2015 specifically.
Each sticker will include an index that compares the
emissions of global warming gases from the vehicle with the
average projected
emissions from all vehicles of the
same model year, and identifies the vehicle model within its class with the lowest
emissions of that model year.
Say I have data on
average precipitation for the last 30 years in the Southwest United States, as well as simulations from 20 different climate models of current and future precipitation in the
same region, and I want to know what the expected change in precipitation will be at the end of this century under a specific
emissions scenario.
The 20 % is the increase in additional CO2 levels over a period of in
average 8 years, caused by
emissions increasing by 22 % over the
same time span...
