Moto X is smaller than the Nexus 4 — another of my favorite phones of the past year or so — despite the displays having
the same diagonal measurement.
However, like its little brother the G6, the V30 uses a taller 18:9 aspect ratio, which (because geometry) has a smaller screen area than a 16:9 phone with
the same diagonal measurement.
The two might share
the same diagonal measurement, but in terms of area, the S8's screen would be smaller.
Not exact matches
The new one measures 7.5 by 4.8 by 0.3 inches, yet the screen has the
same six - inch
diagonal measurements as always.
So yes, at 85.12 cm ², the Galaxy S8 has a significantly smaller display area than a 16:9 phone with the
same diagonal screen
measurement (which would be 92.16 cm ²).
If every rectangle has the
same aspect ratio — the relationship between its height and width — then knowing its
diagonal measurement gives us a rough way to compare or at least rank those rectangles by size.
Increasing the
diagonal measurement of the iPad's display from 9.7 inches to 12.9 inches while maintaining the
same 4:3 aspect ratio yields a substantial increase in display area of about 40 %, leading us to believe that Apple will not simply scale up the existing iPad resolution to the larger screen size.
