At the
same time, however, it is important for us to add that scientifically
historical study of the
tradition is an important and necessary corrective to the possible excesses of a more passionate approach.
But if
historical theology and church
tradition teach us anything at all, it is that many of the ideas we have held to most dearly have been the
same ideas that have cost the church and the world most dearly.
That is, its attention to congregations must be both
historical, placing them in the larger contexts of
traditions through time, and globalized, placing them in the larger context of contemporaneous cross-cultural enactments of the
same practice of worship.
In the synoptic
tradition, on the other hand, although the
same mythological overlay and parenetic application is there, the fact remains that we do have what we would call
historical material and historicizing tendencies in a way we do not have elsewhere in the New Testament.
In addition to these two main
traditions there is a Jungian faction, also venerable, and the recent «hidden figuration'theories of Pepe Karmel, presented in the catalogue of the last retrospective, but these latter have the drawback that they treat Pollock's work as if it were analysable in the
same way as any
historical figure painting.
This work can be interpreted in the simplest, most direct manner — as a stereotyped image of China's food culture and painting
traditions, but at the
same time, its multiple references to various Chinese social and
historical backgrounds make interpretation much more difficult: the use of objects to express morality in Chinese landscaping, satirical poetry mocking ostentatious refinement, and the imitation of handwritten menus to capture a scene of civil life... Viewers unfamiliar with the specific context can easily find themselves lost in the smokescreen of mysterious Oriental poetic calligraphy and bonsai art.
Same goes for the Inuits, I don't care about their
historical whaling either... the U.S. had
historical slavery but we don't want to keep that
tradition alive.
