The theme of a
cop and
killer being two sides of the
same coin has been explored countless times before, and Insomnia doesn't really introduce any new twists on it.
It's a lovely portrait of male friendship; considering «Shaun of the Dead» and «The World's End» so frequently put Frost and Pegg at odds, it's nice to see their characters so thoroughly on the
same team and enjoying one another's company, delighting in their
killer cop movie one - liners and the intense action that invariably breaks out near the film's climax.
The film is in the mold of THE
KILLER (John Woo) in that the story has the duality of portraying both the
cop and the baddie in a sympathetic way and portraying them as two sides of the
same coin.
Not that other movie in the 90s or that horrible
cop drama series of the
same name (why the idiots at the Fox Network were trying to sue Microsoft over ownership and the rights of the name
Killer Instinct when the K.I.Arcade game came out year's before that pathetic TV
cop drama series that nobody even remembers anymore), I mean a real
Killer Instinct movie based on the real
Killer Instinct, as in the game (s).
