For the correspondence between the two to be identical, a civilized society would have to be the exact
same kind of entity as some other type of Society, inanimate or personal for example, which of course is not the case.
Not exact matches
The circumstances required for sexual reproduction (different in
kind from what I mean by «metaphysical division,» although a different branch on the
same path
of interaction between matter and the élan vital) by more complex
entities is
of course still more particular (and improbable without the intentional element).
While an event is relative in being internally related to other
entities of the
same logical type; which it requires by a necessity that is «particular and definite,» a species or genus is relative only in that it requires, by a necessity that is «generic or indefinite,» one or more intentional classes (
of individuals or
of other more specific
kinds), all
of which are only contingently nonempty (1970a, l0l f., 103, 109).
In each case, the source
of the difficulty is the
same: in the sense that he himself expressly gives the term, it can be applied at most to
entities of some specific
kind or
kinds and, therefore, is anything but a variable having «an infinite range
of values» (116).
«What we have described as globalization is remarkably close to Teilhard de Chardin's planetization, in which «[mankind, born on this planet and spread over its entire surface, come [s] gradually to form round its earthly matrix, a single, major, organic unity, enclosed upon itself.4 Thus the globalization
of humankind could lead to the formation
of a new
kind of living
entity — a social organism — on the
same cosmic principle as that by which atoms join to form molecules, molecules join to form mega-molecules, mega-molecules unite to form living cells, and innumerable cells constitute an organism.
My case was one in which the author, editor and reader are all known
entities (in fact, they all know each other personally); the reading takes place in the exact
same cultural and social context as the writing and editing; and the reader is himself a really smart guy, Ivy - league Ph.D. and all, who had spent a decade training the editor to be a certain

Since the difference between a «zero amount and a «negligible» amount
of some capacity is a difference in
kind, this change would in principle allow the
entities of physics to be interpreted in terms
of the
same categories used for interpreting
entities in which the capacity for self - determination is not negligible.

kind of analysis shows that the section in which it is located — the third section
of the first chapter in the second part
of Process and Reality (II.I.3)-- is mostly made
of insertions.34 However, given its thematic continuity with materials that belong to the original version
of that
same section and
of the previous section (II.I.2), the first full paragraph
of Process 46 appears to belong to that original version.35 More precisely, Whitehead had clearly stated, in section II.I.2, his option for a «theory embracing the notions
of «actual
entity», «giveness», and «process»» (Process 43), a theory in which «the ontological principle is the first stage» (Process 43).
At first glance, the formulation
of the problem from which Whitehead proceeds in MC — he still clings to the presupposition
of the cosmological adequacy and precision
of the theoretical language
of mathematics — must seem to be itself an aporia: Whitehead wants to investigate various ways — in the first instance internal to mathematics (but cf. MC 465, 524)--
of considering the «nature
of the material world»; at the
same time, however, he wants to understand this world as a unity which, even though conceived as in motion, consists
of only one
kind of entity (MC 468, 479, 482, 525).
Finally, Whitehead's methodology
of descriptive generalization would, on the micrological view, be seen as belonging within a particular tradition, i.e., as involving what might be called a «metaphysical reduction»
of the empirical world to some foundational and actual element, on the
same methodological lines as Leibniz's monads, Bradley's substrative feeling, Alexander's space - time matrix, or Heidegger's Being.12 In other words, Whitehead's actual
entities are conceived as having a special
kind of actuality
of their own as the ground or foundation from which the empirical world derives.

of the Wal - Mart professors did their work as part
of an
entity called the Manhattan Institute, thanks to a major grant from the Walton Family Foundation, they now get to publish the
same kind of materials as scholars with the backing
of a major university.
