In some cases, survival time after surgery have be tripled in patients treated aggressively with surgery [those with large resections lived 3 years and those treated with only tumor removal in
the same tumor type lived 1 year]
By assessing the incidence of a particular mutation or the frequency at which certain genes / pathways are altered across multiple patients (of
the same tumor type), it should be possible to identify key mutations.

Since the cancer cells in both
types of
tumors were the
same, the researchers compared the noncancerous cells present in the induced and transplanted
tumors to explore what might be causing the T cell apoptosis.
«Just as normal cells with the
same genome differentiate into many different cell
types, a single
tumor characterized by specific genetic mutations can contain many different
types of cells — stem - like and more differentiated cells — with the difference being rooted in their epigenetic information.
«Different
types of cancer cells with different strengths and weaknesses are both present in the
tumor at the
same time and can work together to spread faster and more efficiently.
The findings also have potential uses for most other
types of solid
tumors, including those affecting the lungs and ovaries, because the
same protein and enzyme are involved, François said.
For each patient, the suitable combination treatment could then be designed, which, in the first step, would turn the variety of different
tumor cells into a mass of cancer cells of the
same type.
If enacted, such a regulatory scheme could conceivably speed along clinical trials because it would allow investigators to draw from a large pool of people with diverse
tumors that act along the
same pathway instead of culling thousands of people with the
same official cancer
type.
Morrison notes that
tumor growth differs even among patients with the
same type of cancer.
This
same feature,
tumor heterogeneity, may reduce the ability to identify critical gene expression changes when comparing mean gene expression in adjacent
tumor and normal tissues, as
tumors of the
same type may have different sets of genes differentially expressed.
Using
tumor models for both astrocytoma and oligodendroglioma, which are very similar to human
tumors, they could show that one and the
same cell
type, called oligodendrocyte precursor cells, could give rise to both
tumor forms.
Even within the
same cancer

tumors can respond differently to cancer drugs, and some

In addition, genital warts and respiratory papillomas, which are not malignant
tumors and occur in both men and women, are also due to HPVs but not the
same HPV
types that produce the cancers, but rather non-oncogenic HPVs.
A major new insight is the realization that different
tumors of the
same type may rely on entirely different
tumor stem cell populations.

tumors from various patients can often be quite different from each other, even though they belong to the
same type of cancer.

tumors, even those of the
same type, exhibit differences in genetics and morphology.

The challenge is that these mutations are «personal» to the
tumor and patient; i.e., not all
types of breast cancer carry the
same set of mutations, and as a result, different patients have a different, personal set of mutations.
Findings published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute show that immune cells do not respond the

tumors.
