About a year ago at GDC 2007 in San Francisco, I had the pleasure of seeing Radical «s (Hulk)
sandbox game Prototype for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

The PS2
game sparked a
sandbox gold rush that would roll on for years through such series as Crackdown,
Prototype, inFamous, Saints Row, Assassin's Creed and many more.
While it sounds a lot like
Prototype, InFamous did its own thing with a
sandbox - style
game involving a character with crazy electrical superpowers that let him shock people, heal people, and even fly.
In 2009, we all found it oddly coincidental that two super hero
sandbox games, Infamous and
Prototype, released in the exact same time window.
Titles such as
Prototype, Crackdown and InFamous have been breathing new life into the
sandbox with extreme wall running, flying without a helicopter and the ability to harness electricity and use it to your advantage have been giving
sandbox games a fantastic new dimension of gameplay.
Some of Radical's 300 staff are however working on
Prototype, a GTA - style
sandbox game for high - end consoles.
The shift from arena combat to a
sandbox game proved to be far more popular than the original
prototype, selling close to 400,000 copies as of the end 2017.
Original plans indicated that the
game would have a
sandbox style environment, giving the player the option of exploring the vast town not unlike
Prototype or the Grand Theft Auto series but that has since been scrapped.
