I use 100 - grit
sandpaper over the surface to rough it up first with a hand - sanding block before painting.
I would run 100 grit
sandpaper over the entire surface and clean the grit off, then paint.
Two coats should be plenty — I would run medium grit
sandpaper over the surface quickly and then make sure the piece is clean and dry before painting.
Once a few days have passed, use 220 very fine
sandpaper over the area until smooth.

sandpaper over the edges, the final product will look much better if you do.

sandpaper, even though one of the selling features is that you don't have to sand.
