at sauerkraut had some mold around the edge on the top of the liquid and I got scared and tossed the whole thing!
I've learned to do my own fermented
sauerkraut and sour cream but I really do need a fabulous resource like this to try my hand
at many other recipes.
Years ago, on a whim
at the local grocery store I picked up kimchi — a Korean
sauerkraut with some ridiculously good ginger and chili flavors.
A little bit of pulled pork and some
sauerkraut or kimchi

There are a few recipes my mom really excelled
at when I was a wee thing and they included anything surrounding our heritage (Holubtsi - cabbage rolls), Borscht,
Sauerkraut - fermenting somewhere in the house and Pierogi's).
I can usually find them in the refrigerator section
at my local Whole Foods (near the refrigerated
sauerkraut) OR online (click HERE).
Serve
at once, or keep airtight in the fridge for up to 2 days (if you use red
sauerkraut you may find colours bleed a little over time).

I have always loved
sauerkraut (my dad tried his hand
at making it when i was younger but it got all moldy... not a good smell for sure!).
Mouthwatering builds available
at Whole Foods Market's Pearl Street store include the Original Bratwurst topped with
sauerkraut and mustard, Hot Italian with grilled red and green peppers, and Sweet Italian with pickled vegetables, pepperoncini, and grilled red onions.
In San Francisco, chef Stuart Brioza
at State Bird Provisions and The Progress uses the leftover pickling liquid from turnips not only for vinaigrettes but also as a brine to rehydrate wakame (seaweed), which he mixes with
sauerkraut and serves atop a salad of kale and roasted mushrooms.
Now, I urge you to try these
at least once with the
sauerkraut!
Usually it's from dairy - free yogurt and
sauerkraut, then I recently found this coconut water
at Whole Foods and added it to the mix.

at Kieler Brauerei.
Note: If you add these ingredients to the skillet all

Sauerkraut and other pickled foods were once cultured by being left out on the shelves
at room temperature to naturally ferment using salt or whey, but now these food items undergo a fundamentally different process replacing natural fermentation with a combination of vinegar and preservatives to achieve the same acidic pickled flavor, however lacking the beneficial byproducts of fermentation.
