film, but so help him, he tries, and he goes further than
anyone or anything
in bringing life to this bore, which still has enough other strengths at its back to be brought to the border of true decency.
Walter Brennan shines as his friend, a crazy homeless guy and the sanest man
in the
film, James Gleason is perfect as the common sense common man, and Barbara Stanwyck lights the proceedings as the too smart regular gal, unaware that she needs
saving as much as
anyone.
Gavin O'Connor came on board
in the eleventh hour and brought his workmanlike grit and professionalism to help
save this
film from falling off the rails, putting together a perfectly acceptable picture that won't be a blemish on
anyone's record, but won't stand out either.
Having abandoned hope to
save anyone, he gave up on life, sipping regularly from his hip flask and walking throughout much of the
film in an alcoholic haze.
It also highlights the effort that Linklater has made
in support of Independent filmmaking and how he was influential
in helping create the Austin
Film Society whereby old
film prints could be
saved and showed, as well as raising money from filmmakers to help make more
films.Overall, it does little but scratch the surface and a bit more
in - depth analysis to his
films would have been welcome but to paraphrase Billy Bob Thornton on the outtakes at the end; «Rick Linklater doesn't need
anyone to make a documentary about him.
Not that
anyone would want a dialogue - heavy Bond
film, but
in this case, given the potential of an emotionally - charged climax that sees Bond trying to
save a woman's life that he has great feelings for, the cold and calculating set - up just wasn't there to have a powerhouse payoff.
It's easy to forget that Julianne Moore, Scoot McNairy, Michelle Dockery, Nate Parker, Corey Stoll and Lupita Nyong» o are all
in the
film as well, but when you've got Neeson doing things like bribing unruly passengers with free international flights to
save the day, there's just no way
anyone else can come close to stealing the spotlight.
