In our paper published last night in ERL we show the newer Church & White data set with
less smoothing in Fig. 3 (orange line), and you can
see it is more «wiggly» — hard to tell whether these wiggles are true oscillations in global
sea level or again an effect of the limited number of gauges.
If you download 1998 - 2009 cloud cover here, and
sea surface temperatures here, you can
see that, except for a cloud band from ~ 0 to 10 degrees N, cloudiness is generally
less where SST is warmer, though there are lots of details and spatial variation that lessen the correlation.
However recently I've found myself wavering on the issue of how fast we'll
see a transition to a virtually
sea ice free state (
less than 1M km ^ 2 off the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and the north of Greenland) and it's because of the PIOMAS volume results.
One thing I would have liked to
see in the paper is a quantitative side - by - side comparison of
sea - surface temperatures and upper ocean heat content; all the paper says is that only «a small amount of cooling is observed at the surface, although much
less than the cooling at depth» though they do report that it is consistent with 2 - yr cooling SST trend — but again, no actual data analysis of the SST trend is reported.
The buoy, which cost about $ 2 million to develop and build, had been in the water for just
less than 2 months (
see Pulling Energy From the
Sea).
As for the amount of the bet, look at the paleontological evidence for when temperatures were about 3 C higher than preindustrial levels, find the difference in
sea levels, call it a conservative 1 meter, now total the world property values for the land that is
less than 1 meter above
sea level and
see how much that is.
Though most of the CMIP5 models project a nearly ice - free Arctic (
sea ice extent
less than 1 × 106 km2 for at least 5 consecutive years) at the end of summer by 2100 in the RCP8.5 scenario (
see Section 12.4.6.1), some show large changes in the near term as well.
Taylor also debunked the notion that
less sea ice means
less polar bears by pointing out that southern regions of the bears» home with low levels of ice are
seeing booming bear populations.
It's still cutting - edge research and there's no smoking gun, but there's evidence that with
less sea ice, you put a lot of heat from the ocean into the atmosphere, and the circulation of the atmosphere responds to that... We've
seen a tendency for autumns with low
sea ice cover to be followed by a negative Arctic Oscillation.

less sea ice that allows more heat to be transported into the atmosphere.»
If
sea ice cover was 50 %
less 5,000 years ago and polar bears were very much alive and well, it is hard to
see how claims of their extinction are credible from future ice loss.
At the same time, the ice in the Beaufort and Chukchi
Seas is
seeing less multiyear ice drifting in from the Canadian Arctic, with more first - year ice prevalent in 2011 than in past years.
Yet there's something fascinating about being able to
see a tiny model of one of these great behemoths and know that its location on the
sea is
less than an hour old.
And while you might not
see a difference in graphics power between two phones while playing titles like Candy Crush or Fruit Ninja, there's a vast
sea of games that can bring
lesser phones to their knees.
The first three encounters with Captain Crow will have the player fighting a team of monsters that vary slightly from one fight to the next (e.g. a fencing fox and two
lesser monsters); the fourth fight will
see the player against Gracos, king of the
seas, now in Captain Crow's employ.
Regardless of what you read in the paper or
see them screaming at you about on cable news, anyone looking at the right data (patting myself on the back and saying «I told you so») could tell you that — even though there was a
sea of foreclosures a few years ago — with
less and
less people missing mortgage payments foreclosures of the future would be down.
