There's far too much to
say about the films on my list, so here are a few random things I love.

I think the problem is that the
film arrived before local industries set their rules
on this,

It's difficult to discuss what's good
about the
film without treading into spoiler territory, since many of its biggest laughs are predicated
on the sheer unlikeliness of certain events or images — or the seemingly bottomless depth of its special - guest cameo roster (suffice it to
say that at least one world - famous Torontonian shows up to get in
on the fun).
What the
film is
saying about goodness (or ugliness or badness) is unclear as the «good» is just as bad as the «ugly,» but I can imagine that it's attempting to show that morality is more contextual than absolute, creating, as it does, an environment in which everybody is immoral even the Union and Confederate troops, who seem to be passing through this
film on their way to another.
As you watch any of those
films, you think
about what they're trying to
say, or what they «mean,» or
on a much simpler level, what the heck is happening from one minute to the next.
Having all just finished college, each is deciding
on what path to take in life, and its Jim who has chosen the most shocking path for the group of friends as he has chosen to ask his girlfriend Michelle, the infamous flutist of the first two
films (the wonderful Alyson Hannigan, which, ya know, she is so good in it, we did nt need the other girl characters, which is sad to
say, but eh, this was always
about the guys so who cares?).
Malick is described
on the package text as a filmmaker - philosopher, and his collaborators have plenty to
say about his quiet but effective
filming style.
About the only thing to be
said on the
film's behalf is that it does have the courage of its own mistakes.
This is easily my favourite
film ever made and has been since I was
about 5 years old, I think it's safe to
say that this
film made a huge impact
on my childhood.
This has been interpreted by many to mean that Kubrick has made a pessimistic
film about the inevitable conflict between man and his machines, but it just might be that what he is
saying is we better not rely completely
on machines no matter how infallible they may appear to be.
This is just a bad
film that tried to
say something
about social injustice, the class differences between the rich and the poor, the unfair loss of welfare programs, the inhibiting cost of health insurance that is falsely being blamed
on the government when it is the fault of insurance companies why the rates are so high, the hypocrisies of the Gulf War, and the failure of the media to be more responsive in covering all the political corruption.
But it doesn't focus enough
on any of those things to fairly
say that it's what the
film is «
about.»
Enough
Said is a unique
film in that it isn't
about the man having to overcome his foibles in order to be worthy of the woman he wants, it's
about a woman who must look within and come to terms
on whether she can accept someone else into her life who has a set of flaws that someone she regards highly finds unacceptable.
Except to
say that whoever thought it was appropriate to have these beloved characters shooting at each other and talking
about killing each other (
on top of Mater's disastrous cultural insensitivity) should never work
on a children's animated
film again.
That
said, after having seen the
film, one should be able to parse these elements and make objective judgments
about what they've just seen; not based
on what they didn't get.
So
says professional killer Jackie Cogan at one point in Killing Them Softly, the third
film by New Zealander Andrew Dominik - and considering the filmmaker's efforts to establish a connection between the events in the movie and the economic crisis started in the late 2000s thanks to the greed and lack of scruples of Wall Street, it is easy to see Cogan as an ordinary employee of any company complaining
about the lack of vision of his bosses and,
on the other hand, the big bankers as Armani - dressing versions of the violent mobsters who inhabit the crime section of the newspapers.
Jonathon Sharp (JS): The
film says a lot
about you guys with the chemistry
on screen.
Unfortunately, it won't sound so kind when I mention that this is
about as much as I can
say in a positive regard, as the
film fails
on practically every other fundamental level.
