breeder dogs have now had to endure for DECADES.
If only the KC with its well - stocked bank account — all those litter registrations from
breeders, large and small
scale certainly amount to a hefty sum — were as efficient as a tiny, voluntary group of investigators
who know exactly what the conditions some of the breeding dogs supplying Pixieland puppies are forced to live in, while the KC ponderously investigates.
Some of those may be very well kept large -
scale kennels, but I'd suspect that most of the people
who would make that statement would not consider a large
scale breeder responsible (regardless of how well the animals are kept) or call responsible someone
who does not see through the final outcomes for the dogs.
Certainly most small
scale and hobby
breeders would never sell through a pet store — but certainly a lot of the large -
scale breeders likely do (or through brokers
who then sell to pet stoes).
A hobby
breeder is someone
who wants to do this on a small
scale, as a hobby.
With public awareness growing over the past decade, mass
breeders have been exploiting a loophole in federal regulations: Those
breeders who categorized themselves as retail pet stores, selling dogs directly to the public, were not required to be licensed in a way that would subject them to USDA inspections — unlike large -
scale breeders selling puppies to pet stores.
The investigative work the team has done has already shown that Texas pet stores, in addition to buying directly from
breeders with Animal Welfare Act violations and from brokers
who work with puppy mills, are also buying dogs from this market here in Canton — and many large -
scale breeders come to sell here.
Yet buyers
who wind up with puppies from large -
scale breeders also may wind up with large vet bills.
And when I contacted the auction's owner to ask for an interview, he was welcoming and spent an entire day with me, talking openly about his personal history, his current business practices and even taking me to meet the types of
breeders he respects —
breeders whose dogs, when I got to their commercial -
scale farms, were running and playing in spaces as big as many suburban backyards and even ballfields, dogs
who came up to me to say hello and, in most cases, seemed just as happy and normal and healthy as my own two spoiled mutts at home.
Also, to those
who would like to know more about how commercial -
scale kennels operate, I would encourage you to go introduce yourselves — respectfully — to some commercial -
scale breeders.
Nobody is arguing that dogs should be treated badly, kept in cages their entire lives, denied socialization with other dogs, or anything of the sort, but to suggest that there are no commercial -
scale breeders doing a good job with their dogs is a comment that could only be made by somebody
who has never taken the time to go out and spend time on the farms owned by all kinds of commercial -
scale breeders.
As improvements for animals come & go, animals are added to and taken off endangered species lists, horse slaughter comes & goes... Those
who profit from puppy mills are often at the lower end of the economic
scale... They do not have powerful lobbies, as do traditional
breeders...
