Crichton's directorial style is a bit overambitious, with inordinate amounts
of ominous
musical scoring during
scenes which aren't particularly frightening.
The involvement
of so many real
musical luminaries (in particular Aerosmith's Steven Tyler in a key rôle as himself, and Outkast's André Benjamin eating up his
scenes as trigger - happy gangsta Dabu) may bring a certain postmodern edge to the proceedings, but it also goes some way to explaining the film's gently - gently approach to the record industry — an industry which would be unlikely to release its stars to a project that was aiming to
score any real hits against it.
On the downside, too many
scenes are wrapped up in a barrage
of CGI effects that, along with a pounding
musical score, prevent us from engaging with the performers and caring about whether they live or die.

scene that depicts the building's imminent collapse is tense and superbly sets the film's tone; clinically stark, devoid
of warmth or any
musical score and working within a very drained palette - a style that appears to be straight out
of the Michael Haneke handbook (Amour, Funny Games).
