Scratching is one way of marking territory (there are
scent glands among the paw pads), so declawed cats will still «scratch» things even though there are no claws to sharpen.
They communicate
among themselves with posture, body language, vocalization, and
scent, i.e., pheromones, which are components of urine and the anal
gland secretions that coat the feces.
