In fact, the Carnegie Report's recommendation to this effect acknowledges that it is «building on the work already underway in several law schools...» 49 And based on these experiences, a robust literature has developed extolling the virtues of integrating writing with doctrine.50 In reviewing this literature, a number of themes emerge: integration sends the right institutional message to students about the importance of writing in their legal careers and about the relationships between doctrine, analysis, and writing; 51 there is a strong connection between writing and thinking; 52 and writing is an integral part of the learning process.53 Integrating doctrine and writing therefore sends an explicit message that law students do not write in a vacuum, they always write about some legal doctrine, and they learn that doctrine better when they analyze it fully enough to be able to write about it.

Because the university programs were not seen by prospective students as useful training for the practice of law, they lost out to the more practical pathways of apprenticeship and private law schools.85 Only later, when they married the theoretical and the practical instruction, including the teaching of writing and speaking about the law, would university programs rise to become the dominant force in legal education.86

In another story, we wrote here in November about Columbia Law School Professor William Simon's article criticizing three prominent legal - ethics professors for giving bad legal advice with potentially large public consequences.

Some of our colleagues at UNLV have conceptualized the evolution of legal writing scholarship as a series of leaps.2 The first big leap was to take an interdisciplinary approach to writing about teaching writing.3 The second leap was to build community by creating spaces of our own, such as LWI, the Journal, and then later, JAWLD.4 The third leap was to develop a rich, often interdisciplinary approach to studying and writing about legal writing.5 In their article, Linda Berger, Linda Edwards, and Terry Pollman suggested — hoped, perhaps, and I along with them — that scholarship relating to legal analysis, skills and practice is no longer considered inferior to traditional legal scholarship.6 The growing number of schools where legal writing faculty have achieved equal status due at least in part to their legal writing scholarship suggests we have made significant progress as a result of these leaps.7

Well, to counter the negative grades, how about: • Assist law school grads looking for jobs • Encourage pro bono work in the practice of law • Set aside a percentage of first -, second - and third - year salaries to pay down debt • Act as a mentor for law school students • Assist law students in the study of law and legal writing Consider contacting your local dean, and pitching in.

It has been many years since I attended law school — while I know we had complaints about our legal research and writing courses, I don't think this was our issue.

There should be no debate about this in the law school context: law school writing centers should be affiliated with the larger legal writing program.104 Whereas at undergraduate institutions the clientele may be comprised of writers across a wide spectrum of disciplines, law school writing centers, of course, serve only legal writers.
