After our
session one woman came up to me and explained that she was working to help a large
school district roll - out
Breakfast in the Classroom and that she was looking for information on how to support educators and
school staff in the implementation process.
The purpose of the
sessions was to engage directors and managers in a discussion about the regulation changes surrounding
school breakfast that are scheduled for next year.
Over the course of three
sessions we explored ways in which
school nutrition professionals are managing stakeholder engagement, how they are using assessment tools to measure progress and set new goals, and
breakfast program best practices vis - à - vis operations, marketing, menuing, staff training, and equipment.
In our
sessions we discussed ideas for best practices and expansion of
school breakfast programs.
We have a few suggestions for

Finally, we tackled big topics in
school nutrition —
school breakfast, new meal patterns, stakeholder engagement, leadership development, and resources for fighting hunger — in the education
sessions.

Highlights from last year's summit included developing
school breakfast menus, communication training
sessions, and food and nutrition insecurity problem solving; there were lots of opportunities to get moving, including a dance - off and a sing - a-long, and of course there were visits from NFL players from the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Redskins, the Carolina Panthers, and more.

When Memphis City
Schools dietitian Kim Stewart wrapped up the
session she did so with a short but effective anecdote about a teacher who had a real change of heart about
breakfast in the classroom.
In between workshops and physical activity
sessions, ambassadors and program advisors brainstormed improvements to
school breakfast menus, developed
school action plans, and participated in the «Make Your Own Meme» Contest on the Fuel Up to Play 60 Facebook page.
