We found that historical Catholic shares continue to be a strong predictor of the extent of
private school competition in a country.
Throughout our study, this figure serves as our measure of the extent of contemporary private
school competition in each country.
Thus our finding should not be interpreted as a general statement about the potential of
charter school competition to influence traditional public schools.
Public schools could react to private
school competition by altering their policies, practices, or effort; this is the direct competitive effect.
First, we estimate the amount of contemporary private
