It thinks there's magic in watching a middle -
schooler dance with a giant robot, and maybe that's enough for families seeking a
film about hope, love and brawling machines.
Both
films follow a group of students (in 1980, Maureen Teefy, Irene Cara, Paul McCrane, and Barry Miller are the stand outs, in 2009, it's Kay Panabaker, Naturi Naughton, Walter Perez, and Paul Iacono) through their four years at a prestigious New York performance arts
school where they learn to act, sing and
dance.
Pegged by some as this generation's «Hoop Dreams,» this nonfiction
film documents the senior year of a girls» high -
school step
dance team set against the background of inner - city Baltimore, as each member tries to become the first in their families to attend college.
It's not the most promising way to kick things off (Brewer uses it to illustrate the deadly, post-party car crash that incites the no - song - and -
dance law in the
film's setting of Bomont, Tennessee), but its poor impression doesn't last long, as Brewer makes quick work of establishing a liberal and plausible adolescent atmosphere in which Big & Rich can be listened to just after Wiz Khalifa, an antagonist is offhandedly chewed out for using the word «fag,» and the black students nearly outnumber the white students in the high
school hallways.

Packed with pretty people, clinging to the trending hobby of the time (in this case, acappella singing — a few years ago, it was street
dance), and thrown into a
school / college setting just to round up the cliches, it feels like a rehashed
film we have seen before.

schooler who is a lousy student but hyperactive in campus activities; Cameron Diaz in «Very Bad Things,» about a bachelor party that ends in murder; Cate Blanchett as «Elizabeth,» the story of England's 16th century monarch, and «The Judas Kiss,» with FBI agent Emma Thompson on the trail of the kidnapper of a computer genius.
Not un-clever by any grammar
school criteria, it's lamentably shallow as the basis for a feature goes, leading to a
film that's basically every single teen formula in the history of teens (homecoming
dance date intrigue, parties while the folks are away, old friends abandoned for cooler friends then reconciled, and so on) punctuated with horrible special effects and superhero puns.
Maybe it's a nostalgia thing, but when I start up a movie on Blu - ray and see an old -
school Columbia Pictures logo that's
dancing with the sort of golf - ball - sized
film grain I remember seeing on the big screen at the Cooper Theatre downtown, well, it makes me feel good inside.

Fortunately, this movie gets bonus points for lush and rich scenery of the city of Barcelona (which suffer slightly from the DVD's fullscreen presentation) and the
dance sequences choreographed by High
School Musical's Kenny Ortega (who directed this entire
film as well).
The girls collide in an informal
dance contest at
school that turns into a brawl (this fight is the most violent moment of the
film).

school in Forsyth County, GA, where CRTC scores, sub-zero car lines, police interventions and random acts of song,
