She currently lives and works in Oak Park, Illinois and Waupaca County, Wisconsin, and is Professor and Chair of the Painting and Drawing Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).

Most known for her leadership as the founder of the New York Studio School in 1964, Mercedes Matter's firm belief in observation as means to finding form through drawing and painting may be evidenced in her work and her methodology of teaching.
