We conducted our analysis alternately using absolute student achievement, measured with statewide mean SAT scores for the 1989 — 90 school year and the mean high -
school dropout rate calculated from 1990 census data, and with a second measure that represents the deviation of actual achievement from expected student performance.

calculated based on student achievement, student growth, closing achievement gaps and whether students are prepared to graduate, as well as test participation, absentee and
dropout rates.

school dropout rate.
The state longitudinal
dropout rate is
calculated by determining the total number of students enrolled in Texas public
schools in seventh grade and subtracting the total number of those same students receiving a high
school diploma five years later, excluding students who will not graduate but are still enrolled in the regular
school program that leads to acquiring a high
school diploma (such as students who were retained or do not have sufficient credits), divided by the number of pupils in the original seventh grade group and multiplying by 100 to determine the percentage.
But
dropout rate is no longer necessary to
calculate, and it has all sorts of potential for mischief when
schools publish it based on administrative data.
