That's the subtitle of my new story in Education Next, about an experiment to take a successful religious
school education model to the public sector.

a school education model, and it doesn't work.»

Schleiermacher had arranged them in precisely that fashion, and ever since then, that picture of the essential movement of theological
schooling has ruled wherever the «Berlin»
model of excellence in theological
education has been adopted.
Several
schools are undertaking innovative programs in continuing
education, while others are offering new
models for contextual
education.
Not only does Wood distance himself from the «Berlin»
model's picture of what is involved in
education in Wissenschaft he also rejects its definition of theological
education as professional
schooling: «Theological
education is not necessarily professional
education for ministry, but the heart of proper professional
education for ministry is theological
education» (93).
The endowments of the wealthiest universities should be taxed to fund a common purse for
education that can be spent on tuition tax credits to help all Americans afford some form of post-high
school education, which is what we need today as the old student loan
model becomes burdensome for young people.
Though these two elements — integration and formation — are the most costly parts of college life, they are also the only reasons not to reduce the spendy, four - year residential
model to a two - year, web - based, vocation - focused, trade -
school model of higher
education.
The catechetical concern became Christian
education, typically following a
schooling model informed by secular pedagogy.
Whereas prior to World War II liberal arts colleges provided the
model for higher
education, and universities were liberal arts colleges with graduate and professional
schools attached to them, now the heart of higher
education became preparation for a job.
The following fall, I repeated the seminar at Yale Divinity
School, and for this I wrote a paper on «Linguistic
Models and Christian
Education,» which I later read at the Professors and Research Section of the National Council of Churches and published in Religious
Education for July - August 1966.
According to the «Berlin»
model, excellent theological
schooling requires two foci:
education for professional ministerial leadership and critical theological inquiry.
Thus Niebuhr moves to correct the problem in the revisions of the «Berlin»
model of excellent theological
schooling that we noted in the earlier reflections of Harper, Kelly, and Brown on North American Protestant theological
education.
The current discussion of what's theological about theological
education can be read as the first discussion of theological
schooling in which both
models of excellence are explicitly engaged.
It is not clear, however, whether Brown's constant stress on high academic expectations simply assumes the canons of critical, orderly, disciplined inquiry that the research university
model had made commonplace in the 1930s in American graduate
education outside of theological
schools, or whether he is rather calling for theological
school teachers who are very learned but are not necessarily themselves engaged in original research.
Catholics are already copying Protestant techniques for generating enthusiasm in their children (there's even a growing Catholic niche within Contemporary Christian Music), and evangelicals are tinkering with the
model of Catholic
education in their own Christian
schools.
The
model of excellent theological
schooling symbolized by the inclusion of a faculty of theology in the University of Berlin tied «practical»
education for a socially necessary profession (the clergy) to the «theoretical»
education of a research university on the grounds that future clergy would be best equipped for their ministerial functions if they acquired capacities for rigorous critical research.
The Expeditionary Learning
model was developed 25 years ago out of a collaboration between the Harvard Graduate
School of
Education and Outward Bound USA, and the Outward Bound principle of building confidence and knowledge through shared challenges is still at the heart of the EL
model.

education to precisely those «disengaged families and students,» so that when those children arrive in middle
school, they won't have the kind of difficulty doing demanding work as did the kids who left the Bay Area KIPP
schools or who underperformed at the Promise Academy middle
school in its first few years.
