We never ordered take out (I actually didn't even try Chinese food until high
school — and it was at friend's house), we never went to ethnic restaurants, and we never experimented
with different cuisines in the
kitchen.

The
school has a killer shop
with every
kitchen tool you've ever coveted, plus racks of special ingredients which means we students can pick up some fairly exotic recipes AND things maybe not so available at our corner grocery.
So I left law
school and I headed out west and reconnected
with my passion for cooking that I had as a child and started working in the
kitchen of a natural food store in San Diego and just started experimenting in the
kitchen and just getting really creative.
Baking

kitchen equipment and the planting and maintenance of the
school garden.

The sad reality, as I have said many times before, is that our
school meal programs are almost criminally underfunded; our
schools mostly lack
kitchens,
with some literally operating the meal program out of a closet, and even the
schools with kitchens from 40 or 50 years ago lack equipment
with which to scratch cook.
They call for boycotting the cafeteria, or bringing in food trucks to sell to students out in front of the
school in competition
with the cafeterias, or even demanding that local restaurants be allowed in to provide catering directly from the cafeteria
kitchen.
The Huffington Post reports that a surprise inspection of Boston public
school kitchens found food being served
with expiration dates going back to 2009.
Similarly, I once met a dynamic culinary arts teacher in my district, Kellie Karavias, who worked
with the principal at her former
school to completely integrate health and nutrition programs throughout the day, including the building of an in -
school, instructional
kitchen, «Five a Day Fridays» where children bought fresh fruit and vegetables from a cart each week, and an after -
school program that offered counseling and exercise to obese children and their families.
While some
school districts already serving better food might appear to be «doing more
with less,» they usually have extra funding or costly resources, such as a central
kitchen for scratch cooking, which other districts lack.

So we're asking for funding for
schools to upgrade
kitchen equipment and to help
schools provide cafeteria workers
with better training.

They are cheap and easy to prepare, which is important in
school systems
with dwindling numbers of working
kitchens, minimally trained labor and only about $ 1 to spend per meal.
With school lunch being debated on Capitol Hill, «Top Chef» should get in on the action and focus some
kitchen challenges on
school meals.
It contracts
with another provider, Preferred, to serve
schools with no working
kitchen.
It can be a photo of a
school lunch tray
with a pasta entrée or side salad; it can also be a salad bar or serving line
with featuring a pasta dish; it can be a photo from your
school kitchen where cooks are preparing your students favorite pasta menu item.
That means that the popular reality show,
with its supersized personalities and offbeat
kitchen challenges, will be in Washington at the same time as Congress is considering the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act, which provides funding and guidelines for the national
school lunch program.
During the intervening hours, I met dozens of
school nutrition heroes — serving pancakes
with mixed berry compote, explaining their Dance Party kits from the award - winning Student Wellness Program, scrubbing potatoes in the central
kitchen, customizing sub sandwiches for teens, working the El Fuego Food Truck (and preparing my lunch), and sampling coffee
with teen entrepreneurs at their student - run business.
My feeling right now is that we might well have success on a pilot basis in a
school with a
kitchen, but what about the many, many
schools in HISD that don't have such facilities?
