New data from researchers at Stanford, based on some 300 million elementary -
school test scores across more than 11,000 school districts, reveals the school districts where children are showing the most growth.

On average
across middle and high
school math, TFA teachers out - performed veteran teachers by 0.07 standard deviations, the equivalent of 2.6 additional months of instruction or helping a student move from the 27th to the 30th percentile on a normal distribution of

States should report how a
school's
test scores and
test -
score gains compare with the
scores and gains of demographically similar
schools across the state and locally.

schools serving similar populations were compared
across the state of Indiana, and poverty was controlled for, those

In this latter paper, Reardon and coauthors report that while racial / ethnic
test score gaps average around 0.6 standard deviations
across all
school districts, in some districts the gaps are almost nonexistent while in others they exceed 1.2 standard deviations.
Important new work by Reardon and his collaborators shows that not only
test scores [5] but also racial
test score gaps [6] vary dramatically
across American
school districts.
The ideal situation to assess the impact of tracking on
test scores of different groups of students would be one in which students were assigned to tracking or nontracking
schools randomly, and the performance of students could be compared
across school types.
In 2007, Ozkan Eren and Daniel Millimet examined the limited variation that does exist
across American states and found weak evidence that longer
school years improve math and reading
test scores.
Proponents, insisting that tying teacher salaries to measurable standards will improve
schools, have instituted a wide variety of incentive plans
across the country: Some evaluate teachers based solely on standardized
test scores, some on teacher skill development; some offer more pay to teachers working in at - risk

Reporting
