school (remember, it takes us at least 20 minutes with no traffic to get to
school so eating in the car gives us even MORE
time to sleep lol).
Lots of
things have changed since then, but also not that many
things: I am still in
school, still excited
for school to be over, I still listen to podcasts, I still have a cat (although this
time a different and more permanent one), and I still have this blog!
I have a hard enough
time getting out of bed at 5:15 am and then am greeted by a dog extremely needy
for attention, kids to get ready
for school, email to respond to, social media to monitor and loads of other
things — like dishes and laundry!
Nowadays I don't even care and honestly, I'm really glad my parents couldn't afford to make me a metal mouth back then... I had plenty of other
things going
for me at the
time anyway... unruly curls WITH bangs, being a foot taller than every boy in
school, and ohhh, let's not forget the
time I thought it would be a good idea to get a FREAKIN PERM!!!
While playing in the sandbox at recess or nature walks

time would seem to be obvious choices, it was fun to learn that my preschooler's favorite

school is LUNCH!

for a successful, purposeful, and joyful life in the 21st century are best cultivated through an education that fully meets and engages the developmental needs of children, which are fundamentally different in early childhood, elementary
school, middle
school, and high
school — in other words, «the right
thing at the right
time.»
Balancing all these
things is hard
for dads:
time with kids, driving kids to
school and sport,
time with a partner,
time on their own health and well - being, travelling to work and work itself!
Learning to do one
thing at a
time, focusing, and finishing something before moving on to the next, are essential skills
for school success.
If your kid has a hard
time at
school, finding a specialty camp with all new kids might be a great
thing for their confidence.
If there are other
things that can be prepared ahead of
time — making a lunch, preparing
for any after -
school activities — make sure those
things are done, too.
When teachers and
schools are able to convey both of those messages at the same
time, that you belong here and this is a place where you are welcome, but also that I have high expectations
for your ability to achieve
things, and I'm going to give you the right kind of help and support
for you to breach those high expectations, those two toolboxes combine to be what is most motivating and inspiring to kids.

One
thing that really struck me was seeing
