out phenomenon,
Education Next spoke with two
public school parents: Scott Levy, a local
school board member in New York State, and Jonah Edelman, cofounder and CEO
of Stand for Children.
As a healthful supplement I should like to recommend an earlier, polemical view
of the major problem that confronts us in
education: Albert Lynd's Quackery in the
Public Schools, a neglected 1953 book whose title is not yet
out of date.
In the contentious world
of education politics, the need to spend more on
public schools stands
out as a rare point
of agreement.
This program may yet lift the performance
of our pupils as they go through the
school system, although problems remain:

education in 2010, parents contributed almost half the cost and only 56 per cent was met from the
public purse — compared with an OECD average
of 82 per cent
