Results: Proteomics experts at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory contributed to a study published in
Science magazine centered
on discovery of new bacteria and the metabolic roles, such as
carbon cycling, of bacteria in the environment.
If Andy and John Holdren did as much to raise consciousness about biogeochemical
cycles other than
carbon and CO2, it would deny the advertising men
on both sides of this dueling tuba contest their lawful prey - an innumerate audience ignorant of natural history and
science alike.
There's more
on the
carbon cycle from the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, NASA's Earth Observatory and a Skeptical
Science post by Doug Mackie addressing claims that «CO2 has a short residence time.»
Roger Revelle, one of the pioneering researchers in the study of the human influence
on the atmosphere,
carbon cycle and climate, gave a prescient lecture
on carbon dioxide, climate and the oceans in 1980 that was recorded by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and now surfaces via the Web site Climate
Science TV.
He published some papers
on rainfall in the 1960s, he certainty has not published anything
on radiative transfer,
carbon cycles, climate
science or any of the subjects
on his blog in which you claim he is an expert.
This framework of synthesis builds
on activities of the Permafrost
Carbon Network (PCN)(www.permafrostcarbon.org), an international scientific effort that links biological
carbon cycle research with networks in the physical
sciences focused
on the thermal state of permafrost.
In
science when talking about the
carbon cycle it is the
carbon that is important, as the
carbon takes
on many forms depending
on where it goes, it does not stay as CO2.
But events such as the «big melt» in the Arctic summer of 2007 are non-linear and unpredicted events that can turn climate
science knowledge
on its head and demand that the whole question of what needs to be done and what are appropriate targets be urgently re-assessed in light of new data, including evidence that
carbon cycle feedbacks are kicking in sooner than expected.
Because he won't go and understand the
carbon cycle, and read the
science he took the figure from, he does not realise that when talking about movements through the
cycle everything needs to be converted to the common element
carbon as it takes many forms depending
on where it is.
Far from anything like a start - up, Dave Schimel, the chief adviser
on carbon cycle science at NASA's jet propulsion lab in California, has described the CSIRO as «a national treasure».

The Earth's
carbon cycle is not a topic
on which I have any expertise... If Salby's analysis holds up, this could revolutionize AGW
science... While all this is frustratingly preliminary without publication, slides, etc., it is sufficiently important that we should start talking about these issues.
A few noted skepticism of climate
science, saying
carbon dioxide is «part of the
cycle of life,» but for many opponents of the Clean Power Plan, the argument wasn't whether climate change was real but whether the plan's target
on reducing emissions from coal power would effectively slow global warming.
«There are sharp ecological, climatic and socioeconomic differences among the three countries conforming North America, but there is limited information
on carbon -
cycle science in Mexico,» he said.
