Within the education directorate, legislators held steady NSF's Noyce scholarship program — designed for undergraduates planning to become
science teachers — after NSF had
requested a $ 10 million cut in the $ 55 million program.
I
requested that
teachers provide these students with a pre-assessment for the
science material that was going to be covered in the next month ~ with the goal being to determine if these students had already mastered the content.
The federal agency rejected a
request for a two - year, $ 3.1 million grant for the Scope, Sequence, and Coordination of High School
Science Education project run by the Arlington, Va. - based National
Science Teachers Association.
In response to Colorado's new
teacher evaluation system, a system plagued by ambiguity and fear, CEA funded our grant
request to recruit NBCT and other master elementary, middle and high school
teachers in Cherry Creek Schools, representing Social Studies, Language Arts, Math,
Science, World Languages and ELL, to participate in a professional development activity centered on best practices and the new system.
Our
teachers may also
request consultation with the Faculty to develop ideas for their environmental
science curriculum.
Some of the common
requests were for
science labs, after - school programs, more computers and technology, summer school, safe playgrounds and improvements to their buildings, more
teachers and even more social workers.
Morning Education will also be watching to see how lawmakers respond to new administration initiatives and administration priorities, like a $ 4 billion computer
science investment, a $ 1 billion program to attract and retain
teachers in high - need areas and a $ 120 million
request to encourage school integration.
We are having serious problems with fedloan around them not giving credit for teach grants that have been fulfilled with the 5 years of teaching in the appropriate schools — they claim we did not respond in a 30 day period (which we did) and that because of that they have nullified the grants and converted them to loans despite 5 long years of teaching service fullfilled (with certificates sent in) as
requested by the dept of eduation several years back when they were really looking for qualified
science teachers...!!!!! UNCONSCIONABLE!!!
Some of the proposals «highlights» include: (1) fully eliminating the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, slashing the $ 3.2 billion budget, and eliminating proposed advanced nuclear energy technology programs from the Office of Nuclear Energy; (2) eliminating the Innovative Technology Loan Guarantee Program; (3) cutting $ 1.59 billion from the Office of
Science, including the elimination of two of the four Energy Innovation Hubs, elimination of the 46 Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRCs), elimination of the Workforce Development for
Teachers and Scientists Program, and a broad range of other cuts to basic energy
sciences; (4) eliminating the power marketing administrations; and (5) cutting the administration's FY2012 budget
request for ARPA - E from $ 650 million to $ 300 million.
