Early
in my challenge I had heard about the Summer
Screen series at Somerset House, and keen to include one of the evenings
in my 30 Dates by 30 Challenge, I posted on Facebook to ask if anyone had a friend who might
like to go and watch an outdoor
film with me.
The
film wasn't great, but I had a really lovely night, and would recommend some of the other outdoor movies the British
Film Institute are
screening this summer, especially if,
like me, you grew up watching the
film Grease with the iconic Drive - Thru movie date scene... something it's otherwise very hard to recreate, living
in the UK
in this day and age.
That would be impossible given that there are over 40 of them, and that the
film is structured almost exactly
like a»90s sketch - comedy show
in which characters rarely share more than several minutes of

like the horror genre has been ho - hum lately, rest assured as The Conjuring is one of the best horror

While there are standout examples —
like Darren Aronofsky's disorienting, eye - opening Requiem for a Dream, or the achingly beautiful narratives of animated animal - people addicts
in BoJack Horseman — sagas
like this one usually work better on the page than on the
screen; the brief gloss of
film can make drug use seem rather too appealing, while the idea of spending eight TV seasons with an addict seems rather unappealing.
Charlie Day also shows up (apparently he was
in the first
film) but spends most of his
screen time yelling,
like he's channeling Bobcat Goldthwait
It's not much of an achievement that co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo (held over from Captain America the Winter Soldier) make a better
film than Zack Snyder... but it's worth noting that Marvel (corporation as auteur) have nurtured their characters (even
in weaker
films like Iron Man 2) to the point when they carry more
screen weight than lasting icons Batman and Superman.
Whilst the focus of many reviews of Lost
in Translation has been on the renaissance of Bill Murray's career, Coppola's choice
in casting him
in the starring role and to juxtapose him with Scarlett Johansson is inspired
in its exploitation of his deadpan, ironic
screen persona established
in films like Groundhog Day (Harold Ramis, 1993).
It's usually not a good sign but the
film hadn't been finished
in time to take advantage of any festival
screenings so pushing it to 2014 seemed
like a solid plan.
