A smaller film like Before Midnight was never going to be
in with a shot for any of the main categories but its witty and intelligent script, co-written by director Richard Linklater and stars Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, should have scored an original
screenplay nod.
Hans Zimmer could contend for Best Original Score and when you toss
in a possible Best Picture
nod and the longshot possibility of a Director,
Screenplay, or Supporting Actor
nod, this could be a double - digit nominee next January 2013.
The 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards nominations have been announced and Jordan Peele's completely different but also masterful social thriller Get Out, scored five
nods in total including Best Director and
Screenplay for Peele, as well as Best Picture, Actor, and Editing.

screenplay category for Get Out, which also got a best picture
nod, arrived dressed
in a white tuxedo with wife and Brooklyn Nine - Nine star Chelsea Peretti.

At least it was nominated, although it converted only one of its nine
nods into an award (for best
screenplay) and lost
in the best picture category to John Ford's family saga How Green Was My Valley.

in that jacket, a star - studded field trip, as well as some not - so - surprising picks (kudos to Gary Oldman's prosthetics).

in lead actor, editing.
However, Adapted
Screenplay and Editing
nods also definitely seem
in play.
Nothing for its picturesque cinematography, its challenging
screenplay adaptation, nor its direction by Jean - Marc Vallée, whose Dallas Buyers Club scored six Oscar
nods last year, including a win
in Best Actor for Matthew McConaughey.
From there it became a critical darling
in the United States and earned Egoyan Oscar
nods for Best Director and Best
Screenplay.
They've really went for Juno and Up
in the Air (and some say that he almost got a
screenplay nod for Thank You For Smoking), but they've resisted him since then, feeling that neither Young Adult nor Labor Day was nom worthy, perhaps rightly so too
in the latter case (even though I like the flick).
Besides
in the category of Best Director, «Seven Beauties,» which benefitted from its Holocaust theme, also earned
nods for Best Actor, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original
Screenplay.
All three drew Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and for Russell as Best Director (
in addition to
Screenplay nods, the latter two of which he shared).
His sci - fi thriller Inception broke through the barrier of earnestness to the best picture category
in 2011 and it scored him a second
screenplay nod (the first was for Memento) but it looks like he might finally get the ultimate recognition for his next film Dunkirk.

screenplay nod indicates there was keen support for the film
in the Academy, so it's a shame that didn't extend to its most resonant performance —
in a category, moreover, that was obviously
in considerable flux.
OSCAR CHANCES: Sly did nab a Best Original
Screenplay nod back
in 1976 for «Rocky» but I'm not to optimistic.
Peele, who wrote and directed the film, could also slide into the best director or best
screenplay category, the latter of which is usually more flexible
in rewarding offbeat fare (like this year's
nod for the beautifully deranged The Lobster).
The internet may still be upset that Deadpool didn't get Best Picture or Best Adapted
Screenplay Oscar
nods, but
in 2016, the stars aligned for Ryan Reynolds.
The melancholic comedy set
in the»60s New York City folk scene earned a Best Actor win for Oscar Isaac and a Best
Screenplay nod for the Coen brothers.
