Hongbo primarily uses
handmade paper to create visually compelling and malleable
sculptures that challenge the viewer's perceptions
of metamorphosis in
sculpture.
These beautiful, often decorative
sculptures are made
of handmade paper over chicken wire, some colored with a variety
of materials including ground coal, watercolor, gold leaf and glitter.
At the heart
of this exhibition are three new such series: a line
of five pastels, treated like a kind
of reverse
sculpture, with fat sticks
of chalky pigment ground back to dust and worked into thick pages
of handmade paper; a sequence
of 18 watercolours in which pairs
of pigments are dissolved into each other, layer over layer, into veils
of translucent light; and a series
of ten tall, vertical sheets
of waxed butcher's
paper, carrying oil paint dissolved into skins
of solid and liquid colour.

Mona Hatoum has produced a variety
of multiples and edition works, ranging from delicate
handmade pieces on
paper containing human hair, or small
sculptures such as coat hangers, cups, or necklaces.
Involving hundreds
of saucer - size discs
of handmade paper embedded with scraps
of text, calligraphy and musical scores and suspended overhead with book - binding yarn, the
sculpture makes perfect site - specific sense, but that's all it makes.
Inspired by the skins and bones she comes across in the mesas
of Santa Fe, these
sculptures are made from
handmade paper stretched around chicken wire and uncannily resemble the bleached husks
of snakes.
